“What’s a story without a storyteller?”

Your fave new #punkfunkfolk single "Meaning in the Morning" is now streaming at your fave old digital music service.

“Meaning” is a happy little ditty about figuring out what a song is about.

It makes you think, sure. But it's also somewhat conducive to the shaking of the booty.

Which is perfect for the cerebral twerkers amongst us.

You know who you are.

AND: I’m putting the finishing touches on a quickly-shot full-length music video for "Meaning," and prepping for a companion live selfie walk-and-talk thing.

(“But Buggy, long form videos are dead!” cry the indie music marketing gurus. To which I say: “Meh. I’m having fun with it. Gonna shoot ‘em horizontal just to piss y’all off. And also, because I’m old.”)

“Meaning in the Morning” is the first of a couple-few singles I’ll be dropping to tease the new album DAEDALUS DOWN, which is a sequel of sorts to 2025’s ICARUS ASCENDING.

Can’t wait for y’all to hear the rest of these thangs.

Yes, this photo is real, but to be clear: Mr. Fallon is celebrating the resurrection of the glorious Albany alt mag where he interned back in the day, and not necessarily the current cover boy (moi). But I’ll take it! It’s also probably the closest I’ll ever come to a @questlove collab. Thanks to Erin and Peter for sharing.

DIARY OF A SONG: The making of "Meaning in the Morning," a punk funk folk song about figuring out what a song is about, as told in screenshots and phone vids.

May 11. Buy a new bass. Happy birthday, Buggy. But… ooops: you just told Troy you were done with the record but of course a new toy will inspire new music. It's just a matter of ti--

May 12. A melody fragment arrives from nowhere, with an idea for the chords under it. Don’t stop to think: record it immediately. Seems to work! But what about a bass line? Ooohhh. Exploit the devil's interval. Probably need to do something with this.

4.
May 14. Need lyrics? Revisit notes from January, jotted down after taking a deep dive into RAGTIME: the novel, the movie, and the musical revival. What’s the story become with such different “delivery systems?” (Remember: Dorothy didn’t see the movie cuz she hadn’t read the book first.)

May 15. The chorus is true: I actually slept on the rough lyrics, woke up, and suddenly it all came together - the structure, the overriding themes, etc. AND THE TITLE, lolz.
