Shapeshifter
Monsoon in a past life

There are opportunities that feel like they actively shape your entire being, even while you are still inside them. My time at MANCC Forward Dialogues the summer of 2024 was certainly one of them.

I still cannot thank the facilitators, cohort, and everyone who held this laboratory enough for embracing me and Jeric, two artists who were initially surprised to find ourselves invited into a space for movement-based artists. Through generosity, care, spaciousness, and trust, we left more attuned to one of our many forms, Monsoon x Typhoon.

Over those two weeks in Tallahassee, we wandered through written, embodied, photographic, and sonic explorations, slowly discovering the poetics of our collaboration. A practice invested in repair, ritual, and the animacy of our world, which feels so alive whenever I am with you. You became a channel for the jellyfish, alligators, wasps, anhinga, Spanish moss, shores, and so much more around us, teaching me to listen closely to the teachings that are always speaking.

Thank you Yanira Castro, Makini and Joseph Hall, and my beautiful cohort: Benji Hart, Edrimael Delgado Reyes, Caleb Dowden, HighHealDoula, Majesty Royale-Jackson, Graciella Ye’Tsunami, Kimiko Tanabe, Nora Alami, John Maria Gutierrez, Irisdelia Garcia, Rebecca Fitton, and Emily Hansel.

One day, Jeric and I hope to bring another iteration of Monsoon x Typhoon into the world. Until then, may we continue to love one another through the storms that every season brings 🌊

As we collectively sway into autumn and the remainder of 2026, I find myself returning to these creatures, spirits, and more-than-human beings born from attunement to seasonality and shadow. Fallen twigs, petals, seeds, tendrils, bark, skins, and other fragments gathered across New Haven, North Adams, Chicago, and beyond are slowed, magnified, and honored via hand-cut paper cyanotypes. Through touch, exposure, and accumulation, they bloom into hybrid guardians.

The works move cyclically. Cyanotype informs cut paper, cut paper informs surface. Each piece has touched another, forming a mycelial network of cross-pollination.

Perhaps this is another way of imagining time. Another way of being with land, with our kin, with what we cannot fully name or understand.

“My belief in the transformative potential of art and craft is only being more and more invigorated.”

During Session 1, Visiting Artist Antonius-Tín Bui (@buimonster) brought a generous energy to the campus, setting the tone for an incredible summer. They hosted one-on-one tarot readings, led movement workshops, and co-produced a fashion show showcasing the garments created in the Session 1 Fiber studio alongside Rachael Levine and Diana Kennedy.

Antonius-Tín Bui (they/them) is a polydisciplinary artist and shapeshifter invested in the transformative potential of improvisation, portraiture, craft, and ritual. A monsoon in a past life, they see themself most in movement—in wind, in the shifting blues of the sky, in the quiet sway between presence and disappearance. “Antonius-Tín” is just one of many names unearthed thus far. Indigo, Monsoon, MiuMiu, Umami, and Sky are some others. The child of Paul and Van Bui, two Vietnamese refugees who carved futures from grief and grit, Antonius-Tín carries their legacy in every gesture. Their work honors the spectral, the tender, and the unruly—crafting portals for what cannot be named, only felt, only danced with ancestral shadow.

Lunar New Year Look Back: Antonius-Tín Bui

Happy year of the Fire Horse! 🐴❤️‍🔥 All across the country and world, families are gathering together to celebrate, each bringing their own unique customs, observances, and celebratory traditions to this special holiday. Known in Vietnam as Tết (short for Tết Nguyên Đán, or The First Morning of the Year), it is a time of rest and renewal. It’s also a time to honor one’s ancestors at home altars and temples, with burnt offerings of joss paper (also known as spirit money or incense paper), favored foods, and flowers.

Let’s take a look at how former HCCC resident artist Antonius-Tín Bui (@buimonster), Bronx-born-and-Houston-raised child of Vietnamese refugees, drew on their heritage to bring the trappings of Lunar New Year to a very different type of celebration in “Mums,” installed in HCCC’s Case Study space back in 2021! 🌸🌟

The form and name of these extravagantly detailed pieces are a nod to the Texan high school homecoming tradition of making and wearing large and elaborate pins featuring faux chrysanthemums, ribbons, and trinkets. Many students and their family members make their own personalized mums, as Antonius-Tín did here. Dripping with peacock feathers, incense, and joss paper, they flash with red and gold: the dominant color palette of Lunar New Year celebrations. This “queering” of the traditional Texas mum also centers Antonius-Tín’s Vietnamese-American identity, reimagining this traditional object as an outlet for self-expression in an environment that can be difficult for youth who do not identify with “traditional” gender norms or cultural expectations.

With these gloriously fun and fabulous mums, Antonius-Tín speaks proudly to their history and invites others who may not see themselves represented in any one culture to embrace the beauty of a multifaceted identity.
Wishing everyone (especially all you Fire Horses out there!) an auspicious, joyful, and fun-filled Tết!
