DiscoTech Stations Reveal Part Three
OCTOBER 17th, 12 to 4pm @ the LOVE Building
4731 Grand River Ave, Detroit MI

We’re bringing it back to the roots of DiscoTech on Saturday with a full lineup of stations teaching skills on what the Internet is, how to build it, and the devices that we use to interact with it. There are three emergent themes we will be exploring more this weekend: 1- Networks, Devices, and Infrastructures, 2- Sound and music technologies, and 3- Technological Material Interfaces.

Networks, Devices, and Infrastructures are at the core of how community technology was developed in Detroit. Digital literacy and programs to support Internet access in neighborhoods and how to use the Internet are fundamental to this praxis. People that have been stewarding the work in Detroit, and far beyond will be teaching us about how it connects us beyond what we can see.

If you visit us on Saturday you can learn from @nik._.ki how to make cables, from @commtechny what a portable network kit is, from DCTP about building resiliency, and from Moon about the code behind devices that connect to it all.

Communication technology will be flooding the space on Saturday, from digital to print. The sounds will be going. Come and learn with us.

There are still so many brilliant community technologists to spotlight that will be sonically activating the DiscoTech with us this Saturday. There are three emergent themes we will be exploring more this weekend: 1- Networks, Devices, and Infrastructures, 2- Sound and music technologies, and 3- Technological Material Interfaces.

Sound and Music Technologies have stayed on the hearts of people in media, design, and tech spaces in Detroit. The history, present, and future runs deep when we talk about music and sound in this city; naturally, people have questions, interests, curiosities. We want to demystify some of the tech that makes our sonic environments throughout this city and others. Sound systems, Spatial Sound, Synths, Designing instruments and collaborative music-making processes - we have it all this weekend.

DiscoTech party-goers will have a chance to learn from @angelfoodsystem about setting up a sound stack, from @otodojo about spatializing sound, from @kamaubaaqi_ about digital instruments, and from @venusloc about DIY hardware like oscillators and synths.

We’re ready to show off the amazing group of community technologists that will be helping to activate the DiscoTech with us this Saturday. There are three emergent themes we will be exploring more this weekend: 1- Networks, Devices, and Infrastructures, 2- Sound and music technologies, and 3- Technological Material Interfaces.

Technological Material Interfaces is a term that we use to describe the connection that technologies have with the material world, and to bring a physicality to all the technologies we interact with. We want to understand more of the matter behind the mediums we work with in media, in design, in technology, in electronics, in all of it.

DiscoTech party-goers will have a chance to learn from @triceclark about communal craft practices, from @inkalypse about text as a technology, from @ricky.blanding.ceramics about the materials behind common electronics, and from @noxlibrary about building up political, art-based archives.

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 Topic: We’re going to review open source technology and then download and explore some tools based on case studies.

Thursday, November 5, 2026 Topic: We’re going to practice ssh-ing into virtual machines, learn a little bit about protocols, and then start our art project. We will utilize the RISOGRAPH printing machines to build out our collages.

Friday, November 6, 2026 Topic: We get back into the computers to talk about the physical nature of the internet. We play with the intranet on the PNK kit and talk about building out networks and configuring bit byters. by @bulk_space

The Young Creatives Exhibition brings together work by Detroit artists alongside original work created by students from the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Detroit through hands-on workshops led by those same artists.
Inspired by works from the Detroit Institute of Arts’ DIA Inside|Out installations at Detroit Design District, young artists explored, reimagined and responded to what they saw through their own creative perspectives.
Presented side by side, the exhibition celebrates Detroit’s creative community and the next generation of artists, highlighting what can happen when young people are given the tools, encouragement and space to create.
At the heart of it all is a simple belief: all young people are artists.

MEDIA MAGIC
October 16 and 17th, a team of creative community organizers - Clare Gatto, Nate Mullen, Nour Arafat, and Wes Taylor - are collaborating to bring together two days of gathering spaces.

OCT16 from 6pm to 8pm at BULK Space, we will be celebrating the book release of DiscoTechs and the Alchemy of Community Technology. Edited by Nour Arafat in collaboration with Clare Gatto.

This book serves as an archive and a map towards what we make possible when we share our knowledge, principles, and practices with each other.

During the release party, we will be celebrating three other epic creative projects with:

DiscoTechs are short for ‘Discovering Technology’ and are kind of like a science fair but a party - held in a community space. Come learn how design justice principles can be used to shift power in the creation of community technology through a series of over a dozen skill share stations. DiscoTechs were initially started and run by Detroit artists Diana Nucera and Nina Bianci as part of their work with the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition.

𝐍𝐨𝐚𝐦 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐤 𝐒𝐨𝐧 (@bloomcascade) is a theorist of material culture, science-fiction writer, and cultural worker based in Brussels. Trained in design, they now develop speculative narratives and theoretical frameworks concerned with technics, ecology, gender, political economy, and the conditions of cultural production. Their work develops across multiple mediations—including essays, speculative fiction, diagrams, lectures, web-based narrative systems, and organizational forms—according to the material conditions of each inquiry. They publish the Archive of Patchy Studies as an experiment in how creative labor—namely artmaking and writing—can sustain its value without institutional mediation. As a cultural worker, they co-organize the Queer Collective Workers’ Union in response to the enclosure of queer commons within and around cultural collectives.

After a jam packed couple of months putting on Mutual Assembly, we're back to regularly scheduled programming at BULK Space with our October meeting!

If this is your first meeting (hey new followers!), all you have to do is show up. No prior knowledge, participation or otherwise are required to join CCDET.

We're going to hear from Mutual Assembly participants about their experiences in the show, brainstorm on our 1 year event as a group and have a work sesh on publications for the Detroit Art Book Fair.

If you have coded compositions you're interested in turning into a publication for the fair, bring them with you! And if you can't make it but would like to contribute, send us a DM!

Thanks to everyone who came to make paper with us during Sonia Litynskyj’s Workshop, BULK PULP ANIMISM.
In learning the skill of papermaking, participants considered the life in all things, including papers recycled from the many print projects and programs held over the last couple of years here at BULK Space Media Lab.
