bUm muss schließen – am 17. Dezember 2026.

bUm is closing. Our space for solidarity and community is being taken away from us. But we won’t go quietly! #bUmbleibt #displacement #Berlin by @bum.berlin

@francesca.albanese.unsr.opt @eyal_weizman and many others have spoken at bUm and shared their knowledge.

bUm now has to close due to ever rising rents in Berlin, which is causing free and independent spaces to shrink.

We need spaces of oxygen like bUm. Please share our videos and statements to raise awareness!

Thank you for all the support. #bUmbleibt #displacement #Berlin by @bum.berlin

Many great scientists have spoken at bUm and shared their knowledge. One of them was Ilan Pappé in 2025. We asked him, why he thinks that spaces like bUm are vital, especially in times of rising fascism. Listen to his response!

Thank you for all the support. Please share our videos to raise awareness about the struggle of independent spaces in Berlin. #bUmbleibt #displacement #Berlin by @bum.berlin

Yesterday I invited you to a reading. This one is something completely different 🖤

On Monday, 26 October, I’m bringing The Happiness Engine to @bum.berlin but I won’t be spending the evening sitting in front of you reading from my book.

Instead, we’re turning some of its questions into an experiment.

Welcome to: THE HAPPINESS LAB

An interactive conversation inspired by The Happiness Engine.

Imagine technology could reliably tell you which choices would make you happier.

Would you trust it?

What if you could remove one painful memory and measurably improve your wellbeing, would you?

If you knew a relationship, career or lifestyle was statistically unlikely to make you happy, would that change what you chose?

And perhaps the question I’m most interested in:

What is one thing about yourself you would refuse to optimize, even if changing it produced a “better” outcome?

These are the kinds of dilemmas we’ll put into the room, but not only.

You’ll choose. Take positions. Hear what other people choose. Change your mind, or defend it. And together we'll explore where happiness, technology, ambition, freedom and human agency begin colliding.

You do not need to have read The Happiness Engine.

The novel is our starting point, not homework.

And I’m especially excited to do this at @bum.berlin because this format only becomes interesting when different people bring different experiences, values and ideas into the same room.

No correct answers.

No lecture on how to live.

And definitely no promise that you'll leave happier 😈

Just a room full of people trying to answer some surprisingly difficult questions.

🧪 THE HAPPINESS LAB
🗓 Monday, 26 October
⏰ 18:00–20:00
📍 @bum.berlin · Paul-Lincke-Ufer 21, Berlin
🎟 Free. Registration is required.
👉 Register through:

https://shorturl.at/qSn9M

Come curious.

I genuinely have no idea what this room is going to hold space to. And that's precisely why I'm looking forward to it 🖤

@eye4palestine by @bum.berlin
