In Vietnamese, there’s a phrase I love called hao cơm. It means a dish is so good that you’ll consume a ton of rice with it! The first dish in my hao cơm series is a fried tofu dish with a sauce that’s stupidly simple, yet you’ll want that extra rice to sop up all of the scallion goodness. This was a GREAT week of dinners, capped off with a successful test run of my upcoming summer supper club. Here’s the rundown:  
🍲 The egg roll recipe is on my blog. If you’re local and don’t want to make 100 of them, I’ll make some for you to freeze! DM me.

🌯 My husband does not use recipes, so you’re on your own for these veggie burritos I’m afraid.

🍜 Look up bún riêu on my blog for the recipe for the crab and pork noodles!

🍅 The chickpea dish is a @nytcooking dish from yewande_komolafe. Look up Masala Chickpeas with Tofu and Blistered Tomatoes!

A recap of everything my husband and I cooked last week! My husband is a pretty good cook, but I like eating early and I get off of work at 1:00 PM, so I’m usually the one making dinner. If you want recipes:
🍔 is from @babycatbrewery and it’s one of my favorite smashburgers in the DMV area!!   🍗 No recipe for the jerk wings because my husband looks at five or six of them and then combines them all. Should I ask him for his chicken wing brine recipe though 👀

🍞 My sourdough discard has been neglected and spent all week recovering. I made this sandwich bread with discard and commercial yeast using @farmhouseonboone recipe!

🥣 My grandma used to make this chicken and bean stew for us all the time. She would use frozen peas, but I used some zipper cream peas from @rancho_gordo . My recipe, which uses canned white beans, is on my website!

🦐 @itsalislagle one pot shrimp scampi orzo is a regular player in our household. It comes together really quickly, and it’s deliciously garlicky. The recipe is on @nytcooking

🍅 @martharoseshulman lemony garlic chicken with cherry tomatoes was another banger from @nytcooking. I had a bunch of assorted potatoes laying around in the pantry, so I roasted them up with @burlapandbarrel herbs de provence for an easy side.

A good week of cooking 😋
I am hosting a cooking class at NPR as part of the Asian American ERG’s AAPI heritage month programming, and while I was going through my recipes to look for something easy, it made me realize I have been eating less and less Vietnamese food on a weekly basis. I’m hoping this little series will encourage me to cook more of the dishes I grew up eating, inspire some new recipes and help me recirculate some old favorites. Here’s what was on the menu this past week:

🥖 No recipe for the sourdough. It’s 400g bread flour, 100g spelt, 375ish water, 10g salt and 100g starter.

🎂 Jack requested coffee cake for his birthday. My favorite recipe is the New York Style Crumb Cake from @testkitchen ! It uses cake flour and the reverse creaming method for an extra soft crumb.

🥩 bò lúc lắc recipe is on the blog!

🌮 nachos were made without a recipe, using @rancho_gordo Midnight Black Beans. Pico and guac made by my husband

🥬 cabbage and bean salad is from @rancho_gordo as well. I used some red beans, and added cucumbers and @burlapandbarrel smoked sumac for extra zing

🧅 the scallion oil fried tofu was TO DIE FOR and the recipe will be published this week 🥰

🥔 purple yam soup recipe is in still in the works 👀

Why Ăn Chưa?
 In Vietnamese, it means “Have you eaten?” Implicitly, it means “I care about you.”

When I was in college, I’d FaceTime my parents every day. My mom and I could ramble on about anything, but my dad was a man of few words. He only ever wanted to know two things before he would pass the phone on to my mom: “How are your grades? Have you eaten yet today?”

I’m not as close with my parents these days. Our phone calls can be tense. But my dad will always ask me if I’ve eaten yet. And it’s how I know he cares about how I’ve been doing.

Naming this supper club Ăn Chưa is my way of carrying that care forward. The world can feel uncaring. So many people will tell you that you don’t owe anyone anything, ever. I couldn’t disagree more.

Ăn Chưa is an invitation to sit down, be taken care of and take care of each other. So come grab a seat by my kitchen. Let’s catch up, get to know each other and show up for one another.

If you’ve been to a Suzzy party or invited me to a potluck, chances are you’ve had one of these dishes. These are the tried-and-true foods I reach for again and again. My last meal, if I had to cook it all by myself.
