It’s here! Over the course of the past five years, I visited over 25 former sanatoriums around the United States in the hopes of documenting the remnants of America’s tuberculosis movement. The photographs in this book serve as their final, official record.

Sanatorium is the first book to document the contemporary vestiges of former tuberculosis hospitals in the United States. Commemorating the visionary architecture that played a vital role in combating America’s first modern public health crisis, this thought-provoking photographic survey includes the Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium in Saranac Lake, New York, America’s first sanatorium; Seaside Sanatorium in Waterford, Connecticut, the first children’s heliotropic treatment hospital; Molly Stark Sanatorium, Ohio’s stunning Spanish Revival-styled tuberculosis hospital; and Sea View Hospital in Staten Island, the site of the pioneering antibiotic research for the cure for tuberculosis, among other sites around the country.

Scenes from Indiana State Sanatorium | 2023 | After being up at 3:00am for work, I drove 10 hours west, arriving in Indianapolis, delirious but excited to catch back-to-back tours at Waverly Hills Sanatorium and Indiana State Sanatorium for the making of this book. An impromptu detour on the return trip home led me to Molly Stark Sanatorium outside Canton, Ohio; all three featured in “Sanatorium.”

During the creation of my latest book, “Sanatorium: Inside the Architectural Cure for Tuberculosis,” my goal was to not just show the abandoned ones but also the sanatoria that have been repurposed. Here are some examples from the book along with their images from early postcards:

1/2) Arkansas State Sanatorium, now the Booneville Human Development Center

3/4) Rhode Island State Sanatorium, now part of the Eleanor Slate Hospital

5/6) Mt. Morris Tuberculosis Hospital (NY), now Livingston County Dept of Social Services

7/8) Vermont State Sanatorium, now the training headquarters for the Vermont State Police

Just recently I was so fortunate to present “Sanatorium” at @historicsaranaclake where in 1894, Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau established the first laboratory to study tuberculosis. Now, 132 years later I got to showcase my photography on sanatoria in that very museum building.

Having work of mine at a museum was something I’ve wanted to do since I was seven years old. Now, days after my 39th, I’ve completed that goal!

Also shoutout to Howard who attended my presentation. Howard worked at Trudeau Sanatorium in the 1940s, in dining services delivering food trays to the cure cottages.
