Going into the train yards in the 90s was quite a different experience than it is now. I can only remember one time actually running into another writer at the spot—maybe there are other times this happened and they’ve faded from memory. If I remember right, it was me and Jes STP @jeser787 walking down the line and we saw someone painting a ways down.

We made our way over to see who it was. Turns out it was Swan UTI @swannist_mode painting alone. Maybe he had headphones on because he didn’t hear us come up; we were just a few feet from him when he saw us and almost jumped out of his skin.

The places were ghost towns and hardly any cars had graff on them. The last time I was at a train yard in LA with Jaber, there must have been 20 other writers in there painting.

When I scanned this photo yesterday, I vividly remember shooting it. We were in the yard just looking for graff to get flicks of. I was blown away by this car. It wasn’t super common to see mini productions with characters on freights back then.

Times change. I’m not complaining. The world is going to evolve around us; it just is what it is.

There are two things at odds with each other that can derail a lot of people. One is the idea that you need to be urgent and work hard to accomplish big goals. The other is that you also need to be patient when results take a long time to show up.

Most things are like this. Getting in shape, building a business, learning an instrument, art. You can work really hard every day on these things and not see any results for a while. Even when they do show up, it’s not all at once.

You see a little at a time. It can be discouraging if we don’t remain patient. This is one of the things I like about Stoic philosophy; a lot of the focus is on what you can control.

The only thing we can truly control when trying to achieve something is what we do. The timing of the results is often out of our hands. To fight off discouragement when results are slow, stay focused on what you have control over.

If you do the work every day, the results will happen.
