We used to paint in this area quite a bit in the 90s. This piece felt like it would always be there since I saw it so much. I think I shot this in 1993; I’d stand in front of it just trying to get my head around how this was possible.

Also looking at all the old faded tags. Back then, three years felt further away than it does now. Now days, three years feels like yesterday. Maybe it’s the graff game being so old now, or maybe it’s me getting older.

Either way, this is still one of my favorite pieces of all time. I’m grateful that I shot this photo since it is long gone now.

I was thinking about the lessons death teaches us this morning. Maybe it’s part of getting older, or maybe it’s social media connecting us so much, but I’ve been seeing a lot of people I knew pass away. Some were people I was close to, and some were just casual acquaintances.

It feels like a lot more than I’m used to. One perspective I got from it is that it made my problems feel less problematic. All of those people can no longer do the things they set out to do. We’re still here. We can still push forward and accomplish the things we want in this short life.

You could also use it as fuel to honor the people you were close to by pursuing greatness in your own life.

Whatever way you look at it, there’s a lesson.

Chapter 22 of The Good Life Handbook, a modern translation of Epictetus’ Enchiridion, is titled:

“Prepare to Be Laughed At.”

The overall idea is that if you have big goals and are setting out to achieve them, you’ll probably have people taking shots at you, doubting you, and even laughing at you. Ignore it and keep moving. If you’re doing what you feel is right, that’s what really matters.

People may mock what they don’t understand. Sometimes your willingness to pursue something difficult also reminds them of what they aren’t willing to do themselves. Either way, their reaction doesn’t have to determine your direction.

The book goes on to say that the people taking shots at you may eventually come around and even admire what you’re doing. But if you give up because of their criticism, you’ll have been laughed at twice; once for trying, and again for quitting.

Stay the course.

There’s a concept that I try to follow, but mess up quite a bit. It’s the idea of taking some time to choose your response. There’s a quote that goes:

“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

It’s often attributed to Viktor Frankl, but there’s some debate about that. I first read it in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Either way, it’s a solid quote to live by. I had to relearn this lesson a couple of days ago when I didn’t take that space and regretted it.

The main area where I find this quote important is when something happens that changes my emotional state. Whether it’s anger, stress, or any other shift, our critical thinking and rationality can diminish.

When you’re in a state like that, it’s usually the worst time to respond. Take the space between the stimulus and response to figure out what you really want to say or do.

It will serve you well.

Just a reminder of how powerful it is to do things for your future self. In a world of instant gratification, it’s becoming harder and harder to do things that will benefit you later. Small things and big things all add up.

For me, a small thing is cleaning out my coffee maker so it’s ready in the morning when I wake up. I’m always grateful that yesterday’s version of me did that for me. My future self in ten years, or even in a few months will be grateful that I exercise every day and pay attention to the food I eat.

Think about how much better life can be if, every day, you set yourself up for a better tomorrow.
