When someone asks, “what is social work?” Show them this. ❤️

Marcus Shaw (SSW ‘26), Yibin Yang (PhD ‘26), and Danielle Ferrier (SSW ‘99) in their own words from this year’s BUSSW commencement speeches.

Ask any BUSSW student or alum about their favorite class or professor, and you'll get a story, not just a name.

From courses on racial justice and oppression to systems mapping, our students keep coming back to the same thing: faculty who challenge them, support them, and show up as people first.

The world needs social workers. Right now, more than ever.

That was the message Dean Barbara Jones delivered to BUSSW's Class of 2026 at Commencement — and it's one that every social worker, new or seasoned, deserves to hear.

If you're a social worker, an MSW student, or someone who believes in this profession, watch the powerful speeches from this year’s ceremony. It'll remind you exactly why you chose this path.

"If I was straight and white, it would be different."

That's what one survivor told researchers when asked why he never reported his sexual assault.

A new study led by Dr. Daniel Jacobson López, assistant professor and deputy Title IX coordinator at BU School of Social Work, is among the first to examine how racism and homophobia shape whether gay Latino sexual assault survivors, including Black Latino men, come forward at all.

Co-authored with faculty from Yale School of Nursing and the University of Pennsylvania, it's out now in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence.

October is Health Literacy Month. 🩺

Health literacy means being able to find, understand, and use health information to make decisions about your care. That could be reading a discharge plan, comparing insurance options, or knowing what to ask at an appointment.

It’s also about whether hospitals, clinics, and agencies make that information clear in the first place.

Social workers help on both fronts. They support individuals and families as they navigate care, and they work to make the systems around them easier to understand.
