Spare Room Resident @butta_bites Lau De Leon is in her focus week…
“This week, I’m bringing the old into new light. I want to allow material to speak for itself and lead me through the process. This piece im working on carries wire from the fence that divides the cemetery in Marfa by latin/anglo. It carries scraps of materials left in my studio when I taught my friend to sew. I’ve stained it with rust and the sun. I’ve scribbled my anxieties. I’m not sure where it’s going but I will continue to experiment through the week.” by @butta_bites

5 years with this guy. This photo was taken a few years ago and he still looks at me like that 🥰 I love his Disney prince eyebrows, his belly, and his laugh. I love how he doesn’t run from hard conversations with me, asks tough questions and always tries for me. I don’t think anyone tries for me as hard as he does, even when I suck, even when I don’t try for myself, even when I’m being spoiled and annoying. (Contrary to popular belief, I’m not perfect) Anyway, we’re getting married in a few months. Can’t wait 💍👰🏻‍♀️💐🤵🏻 by @butta_bites

Baggage takes on many forms in ‘What We Carry/What We Bury’, an ethereal playground where remnants of displacement are hidden between the lines.

Laura de Leon playfully embraces uncertainty with her use of thin red twine to uphold the oversized bag tunnel in the row house. This installation will be on view until February 15, 2026.

Visitor hours are 12pm-5pm on Wednesday - Sunday. Free Tickets available online. 🎟️

Artist Rounds, PRH’s longest-running program, open twice a year, in March and October, with each one running approximately four months. In two days, seven local artists will invite the public into their art houses to view a site-specific installation grounded in their practice.

Please allow us to introduce the participating artists:

Laura De Leon @butta_bites

Laura De León is a Mexican American artist based in Houston, TX. Working primarily in sculpture and installation, her practice is an exploration of intimate and collective narratives shaped through craft, memory, and repetition.

In What We Carry / What We Bury, De León reflects on the tangible and intangible baggage we hold: the objects we pack, the memories we inherit, and the invisible burdens we bury. By weaving personal and collective narratives, the installation considers identity, politics, and social dynamics through the lenses of migration, displacement, belonging, and grief. The installation extends beyond the gallery into community programming.

Together, the installation and programming seek to unpack the layered complexities of
what we carry and what we bury, foregrounding the earth, the body, and the community as shared sites of memory and survival. taken in Project Row Houses by @butta_bites

Celebrated my dad’s retirement yesterday, bowling with family, eating chocoflan. He’s worked hard his whole life. I didn’t think he would know how to relax but he has been surprisingly good at it these past couple weeks, loafing around and bugging my mom ha! Cheers to many restful years ahead by @butta_bites

Last month @chapedmonson entrusted me with the opportunity to host a beautiful community dinner alongside @whos_boudreaux at @holyfamilyhtx.

Our intention for the evening was to celebrate the people that make the East End neighborhood what it is. Everyone in attendance shared a connection to the neighborhood-whether as artists, educators, business owners, or longtime residents.

This event was free of charge and made possible by a small group of willing hands and hearts. It was an honor to serve and break bread with our friends and neighbors. The East End is evolving, and as it changes, so does our need to stay connected. We did our best to source vendors from the neighborhood.

I am very excited for the next Heritage Hospitality Dinner with a new menu and set of neighbors to serve.

Last year @almaahhtx gave me the opportunity to build a communal altar for Día de Muertos as part of the @mfahouston fall festival using the cultural practice of alebrije making (photos from last year). This year, 5 new artists were chosen for the theme of myths and legends and I can’t wait to see what they put out!

I’ll be returning this year to put together a communal textile that will be woven during the festival by all of you! Festival goers will make small textile squares and I will stitch them together on site. Please come say hi and make an addition! It’s free to attend but please rsvp.

I cleared out my studio at UH and reflected on the past three years. I learned so many things and met so many people that have become like family. It’s funny how much you can accumulate in three years. I’m closing this chapter but moving on to the next hopeful and confident, surrounded by amazing people and community that I work hard to maintain. Sneek peek of new studio coming soon 👀 by @butta_bites
