Because of current fire weather conditions, Butte PBA is postponing the prescribed burn scheduled for Friday, October 16th, in Butte Meadows. We’ve tentatively rescheduled for Friday, October 23rd, when conditions are expected to be suitable and resources are available. Postponements like this are a normal part of prescribed fire. Every burn has a “prescription,” a specific range of weather and fuel conditions where fire behaves predictably and does the most good for the land. When conditions fall outside that window, we wait. Holding off until the right day is how we keep our crews and community safe and make sure the burn achieves its goals.
We’ll confirm the new date as it gets closer. Thank you for your patience and support! by @butte_rcd

------PRESCRIBED FIRE ALERT---------
Butte Prescribed Burn Association and Butte County Resource Conservation District will be conducting a prescribed burn in Butte Meadows on Lucas Ranch Road.
This six acre burn in timber understory is specifically being conducted to reduce fuel and fire danger in the area.
When: Friday, October 16th, 9 am to 4 pm
Where: Butte Meadows
Size: 6 Acres
Permits: CAL FIRE Butte Unit has issued our LE7 broadcast burn permit, and all applicable air quality permits are in hand.
The past few days have delivered consistently mild weather to the region, providing the appropriate conditions to conduct Rx burns to meet objectives while burning safely. A prescription-based approach to burning means that regardless of the time of year, permits will be issued if prescriptions can be met and the appropriate resources are available. We intend to continue bringing fire back to the landscape when it can be done safely, even if burn suspensions are in place. Please do not burn without a permit. Burning with @calfire_butteco near Paradise Lake, above Magalia on 10/1/2026.

This area was thinned by the Butte County Fire Safe Council in 2020, and some of the area was masticated in 2022.

The aim of this project was to reduce fire threats to the Upper Ridge by removing surface fuels and killing some of the brush which has re-grown over the past 6 years since the area was last thinned.

Thousands of acres of forest have been thinned for fire safety in Butte County, over the past 20 years, and many of these areas are good candidates for this sort of burning, to keep the thinned stands from turning back to thickets. taken in Magalia, California by @butte_rcd

As we prepare for our 2026/27 prescribed fire season, we want to thank @northvalleycf for awarding us a grant from the Donna Murrill Wildfire Fund.
Donna Murrill, a longtime Butte County resident, was forced to evacuate twice during the 2018 Camp Fire. The experience affected her profoundly. She decided to leave part of her estate to NVCF for future wildfire recovery efforts.

With the $10,784 awarded to #buttepba, we are purchasing a @qtacdefense 125HP fire skid, along with all the other equipment needed to turn any 1/2 ton pickup into a Type 7 fire engine. Once installed, Butte PBA will have 2 fire engines! Thank you, Donna and the North Valley Community Foundation, for supporting the Butte PBA and a safer fire future for Butte County. #goodfire by @butte_rcd

Last week, the South Lassen Watersheds Group’s Hydrology and Aquatic Habitat Subcommittee headed into Lassen National Forest to tour the Upper Butte Creek project area. With a recently signed NEPA decision in hand, @butte_rcd welcomed partners to map out the next steps for this newly permitted landscape—spanning Jonesville, Scotts John Creek, and the Humbug-Willow road realignment.

Five years after the Dixie Fire, the focus is shifting from high-level planning to on-the-ground action. The tour highlighted the core macro themes of modern watershed recovery: navigating complex project timelines and balancing heavy restoration work—like road realignments and stream fixes—with the delicate, interconnected needs of both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

Roads, streams, and meadows are connected systems. Restoring them requires partners regularly visiting the landscape to see what has changed, question old priorities, and build collaborative solutions

This time of year, Butte RCD staff are out on U.S. Forest Service-Plumas National Forest and U.S. Forest Service-Lassen National Forest lands, hand-pulling invasive bull thistle. As an added reward, the roots of these invaders are a tasty vegetable!

To try this at home, just..... 1) Consult a good field guide/knowledgeable neighbor (THE APP ON YOUR PHONE IS NOT RELIABLE). Get confident you can tell bull thistle (Cirsium vulgare) from our beloved native thistles. 2) Pull any bull thistles you can find 3) Fry, bake, boil, or do whatever you want with 'em!

No need to peel 'em. (With bigger or more mature roots, though, you may find the core is too woody to eat and the "rind" is the best part.) Pairs well with invasive bullfrog legs and a nice invasive blackberry cider! by @butte_rcd

What an incredible season so far for the Butte PBA. We've hosted 24 live fire trainings, and with the cool, rainy weather, we're still burning.

On Monday, June 1st, PBA volunteers, neighbors, and partner organizations will be burning up to 6 acres of timber understory to improve defensible space and reduce hazardous fuels along evacuation routes in Forest Ranch ahead of wildfire season.

Smoke may be visible from Chico and beyond. Please do not report a wildfire unless you suspect it is NOT our prescribed fire.

All of our burns are conducted by a diverse mix of community members, prescribed fire practitioners, and fire professionals in accordance with CAL FIRE and Butte County Air Quality Management District regulations.

Thank you for supporting community-led prescribed fire!

BCRCD and the Butte Prescribed Burn Association welcome the Cohasset Ridge Prescribed Burn Association to Butte County's beneficial fire community!

We're excited to see the continued growth of prescribed fire work in our region, and we look forward to the positive impact the Cohasset Ridge PBA will bring.

The Butte PBA still remains available to any landowner in the county who requests assistance, including those in the Cohasset Ridge area, but we are excited that landowners there will have a new resource for their prescribed fire needs.

Though we operate independently, the Butte PBA and Cohasset Ridge PBA have a common goal, and we welcome opportunities to collaborate and advance prescribed fire across Butte County.

We wish the Cohasset Ridge PBA great success in their work! by @butte_rcd

Tomorrow, Friday, March 20th, Butte PBA will conduct its first burn of the spring season on Schott Road in Forest Ranch. We will broadcast burn two acres to protect homes and the evacuation route from wildfire. We select our spring burn units to maximize structure protection while mitigating impacts on nesting birds, deciduous plants, and budding hardwoods using the 'low and slow' method. All burns have required permits and will only be conducted under safe burning conditions.

Thanks for understanding that a little smoke now can prevent a lot of smoke and destruction later.

No need to report smoke, but give us a honk if you see us in action. by @butte_rcd

On Wednesday, March 11th, the Butte PBA conducted a pile burn in Yankee Hill. It was a perfect day with beautiful weather. We burned eight piles, cleared roadside vegetation, and trained a new generation of burners.

As you may have heard, the Butte PBA has secured funding. We thank Coalitions & Collaboratives, Butte County Fire Safe Council, the Watershed Research & Training Center, and your donations for carrying us through 2027!

THANK YOU FUNDERS, VOLUNTEERS, SUPPORTERS, DONORS, LANDOWNERS, AND COLLABORATORS!
