Burning with @calfire_butteco near Paradise Lake, above Magalia on 10/1/2026.

This area was thinned by the Butte County Fire Safe Council in 2020, and some of the area was masticated in 2022.

The aim of this project was to reduce fire threats to the Upper Ridge by removing surface fuels and killing some of the brush which has re-grown over the past 6 years since the area was last thinned.

Thousands of acres of forest have been thinned for fire safety in Butte County, over the past 20 years, and many of these areas are good candidates for this sort of burning, to keep the thinned stands from turning back to thickets.

Last week, the South Lassen Watersheds Group’s Hydrology and Aquatic Habitat Subcommittee headed into Lassen National Forest to tour the Upper Butte Creek project area. With a recently signed NEPA decision in hand, @butte_rcd welcomed partners to map out the next steps for this newly permitted landscape—spanning Jonesville, Scotts John Creek, and the Humbug-Willow road realignment.

Five years after the Dixie Fire, the focus is shifting from high-level planning to on-the-ground action. The tour highlighted the core macro themes of modern watershed recovery: navigating complex project timelines and balancing heavy restoration work—like road realignments and stream fixes—with the delicate, interconnected needs of both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

Roads, streams, and meadows are connected systems. Restoring them requires partners regularly visiting the landscape to see what has changed, question old priorities, and build collaborative solutions

In the field: Butte County RCD, USFS Almanor Ranger District, US Fish and Wildlife Service, CalTrout, Plumas Corp, SPI, Hybrid Indigenous Stewardship, Northern California Regional Land Trust, and Sierra Institute.

Check out some of the impact numbers from our 2026 California Tree School Sessions in Butte and Humboldt counties!

This year, we offered 49 classes in total: over 73 hours of class time in and out of the woods! This is all thanks in part to our collaboration with Butte FireSafe, College of the Redwoods, and regional UC ANR Forestry Advisors. We hope that you all had as much fun at CA Tree School as we did ❤️

Plumas Cal-TREX participants continue to excel at building strength into their 2026 cohort. The Learning and Burning Together motto, combined with a commitment to being flexible based on current conditions, has brought out the very best in the modules assembled for the week.
Weather conditions in the Quincy area the past three days have created prime opportunities for the teams to practice skills with live-fire opportunities each day. Tuesday and Wednesday were centralized in the Butterfly Valley area, with 4 burn units. CAL FIRE and USFS drone footage was captured, providing important information to the ground crews in real-time on smoke dispersal and IR (Infrared) information which identifies hotspots within the fire footprint, critical for securing operations.
Collaboration with the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District provided an on-site portable air quality device, an EBAM (Environmental Beta Attenuation Mass Monitor) to the Butterfly Valley area to measure the air quality in the Quincy vicinity. Julie Hunter, Air Pollution Control Officer for NSAQMD reported today that “smoke settled briefly, bringing the AQI levels to USG (Unsafe for Sensitive Groups) for only one hour last night and a few brief hours of moderate conditions in the last 48-hour period. Data demonstrated that good conditions predominated the entire EBAM cycle. This is a perfect example of great burning!”

Approximately twenty community members from across Butte County and beyond joined a tour of the Emergence Biomass Facility, guided by founder Joel White. The visit fostered shared learning and dialogue around one of our most urgent challenges: how to manage forests and working lands to reduce wildfire risk while restoring ecological health.

Founder Joel White guided the group through Emergence’s “vertically integrated bio-economy model” where excess forest biomass is extracted as a fuels reduction strategy, processed into high-value compost via an accelerated decomposition cycle (as fast as 18 days with intensive management), and applied to depleted agricultural soils.

Key technical discussions included the potential application of compost tea in forestry contexts, use of biochar in grazing systems, and the role of soil microbiome restoration in improving reforestation success rates and tree survival post-wildfire.

This kind of cross-sector, place-based collaboration, where land managers, tribal nations, fire agencies, and conservation practitioners can ask questions and share the same table, is essential to developing scalable, locally-driven solutions. 🌿

This week, the Sierra Nevada Conservancy hosted their Board field tour in Butte County, bringing together partners, community members, and land managers to visit landscapes and project areas advancing wildfire preparedness and forest health across the landscape.

Days like this create space for partners to connect in place—sharing knowledge, seeing projects on the ground, and strengthening the collaboration needed to increase the pace and scale of land stewardship.

Conversations throughout the day highlighted beneficial fire, cross-boundary coordination, Tribal partnership, and how proactive fuels treatments can help protect communities when wildfire occurs.

It’s through these partnerships and shared learning opportunities that we continue building healthier, fire-adapted landscapes across the North State.

Thank you to the Sierra Nevada Conservancy team and everyone who helped coordinate this meaningful day in the field!
