For @by_areen, every stitch is an act of memory.

For Areen, textiles aren’t just craft; they’re a language carrying memory. Head to the link in bio to read more about the Palestinian artist’s definition of power, and how she’s making power movies in the region. 🔗

From the opening of Sila, Al’Qala at the @realfabricatapices

Her Hands, Her Land is installed on an 18th-century loom, the same loom once used to weave royal tapestries for the Royal Palace of Madrid.

A tool once used to serve power and monarchy now holds stories of land, labor, and survival. Placed within this structure, the work brings together two traditions of making; Palestinian embroidery and Spanish tapestry. Threads shift in meaning, moving between ornament and testimony, between craft and continuity.

The loom becomes a meeting point, where practices, separated by time and geography, come into relation. Embroidery appears not only as heritage, but as presence: held, repeated, and carried forward, where threads carry memory across time, and histories are not only preserved, but continuously reworked and reasserted. taken in Madrid, Spain by @by_areen

Her Hands, Her Land, يداها، أرضها

Hands that hold, shape, and sustain life, like thread ; never still, always becoming❤️

Inspired by the Gaza–Majdal thobe and traditional motifs such as the Cypress Tree and Cypress Pendant, the work reimagines embroidery as both structure and act: a form of survival.

Currently on view until 5/6 in Madrid at @realfabricatapices as part of the exhibition Al’qala, the work is presented within Sila, founded by @kiyanart

Her Hands, Her Land, يداها، أرضها

Rooted in her, thread by thread, seed by seed, their hands carry the scent of earth and woven threads; the same hands that embroidered history into fabric and harvest into life.

Inspired by the Gaza–Majdal thobe and traditional motifs such as the Cypress Tree and Cypress Pendant, the work reimagines embroidery as both structure and act: a form of survival.

The orange layer, created in collaboration with @inaashassociation embodies the persistence of cultural practice beyond place.

Currently on view in Madrid at the @realfabricatapices as part of the exhibition Al’qala, the work is presented within Sila, founded by Rula Alami @kiyanart

@SceneHome: Palestinian textile artist Areen Hassan draws on heritage as the thread that binds her art and identity. Her series, 'Weaving the Land Back', comprises three large-scale works that reframe traditional Palestinian motifs through a contemporary lens.

By combining cross-stitch embroidery with silkscreen printing, and by allowing threads to unravel, Hassan builds textiles that are simultaneously structured and broken down. This dialogue between construction and deconstruction anchors the series. Embroidery is treated as a structural framework, tracing survival, displacement and identity.

My Palestinian heritage is the thread that binds my art and identity ; Palestinian embroidery is more than echoes woven in every stitch; it is a legacy passed down through generation, from grandmother to mother to daughter. It is a living vessel of memory, resilience, and identity, pulsing through every thread and color, carrying our ongoing stories.

The embroidered layers woven into this series were created by members of the @inaashassociation

This work is part of the series ‘Weaving the Land Back’, on display at Sila Exhibition: All That is Left to You at @marayaartcentre , curated by @cimazzam and @noorahijleh ,in collaboration with @kiyanart
