Artist Spotlight: Grachan Moncur III Some records slip through the cracks of jazz history. This is one of them. Paris, the end of the 1960s. New York trombonist Grachan Moncur III, fresh off two classic Blue Note albums and a run with Archie Shepp, stumbles on two Brazilian musicians jamming at Saravah studio. Add a French bassist, and a one-of-a-kind quartet is born. The result is Aco Dei De Madrugada (One Morning I Waked Up Very Early), Moncur’s little-known samba session: four songs of warm trombone, gentle Brazilian rhythm, and plenty of space to breathe. Overlooked for decades, it still sounds as fresh as the day it was recorded. Our reissue of this hidden gem came out last Friday, so there’s never been a better time to discover it. Best known for his groundbreaking Blue Note albums Evolution and Some Other Stuff, Moncur travelled to France to record for the celebrated Actuel series on the pioneering BYG Records label. 1940-2026 Areski Belkacem We are deeply saddened by the passing of Areski Belkacem, an extraordinary musician, composer, and collaborator whose work left an enduring mark on contemporary music. Areski recorded for BYG Records and remained a singular artistic voice throughout his career. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who cherished his music.
