Sadly had to pick a track from Part 1 but by now we get the gist of #doncherry and #edblackwell on Mu parts 1 and 2. If anything Part 2 is perhaps a little more inward looking. More avante garde (!) in places. Not that it’s inaccessible. Far from it, it’s just the #music swing made more grounded. Voice work, bamboo flute, piano (quite a bit of that) and Ed Blackwell playing stripped back. It’s great of course. @bygrecords for the win as ever. #jazz #vinyl

And award for best cover art I’ll buy all year goes too… I don’t know. There’s something about the #music of #doncherry that seems to move me very differently at times. This @bygrecords release of a 1974 Japanese only press finds Don across 2 records withe 2 live dates across France. The second half of track Eagle Eye (named after his son) finds Don with #johnnydyani on bass and #okaytemiz on drums. Whilst Don rustles up the crowd with a haunting chant, bassist and drummer create groove alchemy. This sound is like crack to me. This is true spirituality - I rewound about 10 times today. The rest of the album is in the Relativity Suite spot with passages of freedom and more worldly, organic sounds. Glad to have snagged this one. #jazz

Don Cherry’s MU is back in stock! I'm really overjoyed that I get to spin these two as much as I can while supply lasts. MU is a wonderful collection of free jazz improvisations, deeply rooted in Cherry’s quest to absorb and integrate world music into his playing. By far my favourite release in the BYG Actuel Series, MU was recorded in the summer of 1969, in a single day, by Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell. Cherry showcases his usual trumpet skills alongside his work on flutes, piano, and voice, while Blackwell is confined to drums and various auxiliary percussion. What a duet these two make. Together, they summon a much more meditative brand of free jazz that rarely ventures into the dissonant, demanding aesthetic most often associated with the genre in pop culture. The sheer range of expression here is awe-inspiring. Blackwell effortlessly conjures the rhythms of Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific, switching seamlessly between styles, sometimes even within the span of a single Cherry phrase. The melodic playing is absolutely gorgeous as well. Cherry’s improvisations never meander or repeat; they keep reinventing themselves, as if his mind never runs out of material. A fascinating piece of music! Fans of Coleman will love this one, and those seeking an experience akin to Coltrane’s own horn-and-drum album, Interstellar Space, will surely find that itch scratched here. - Guy

1940-2026 Areski Belkacem We are deeply saddened by the passing of Areski Belkacem, an extraordinary musician, composer, and collaborator whose work left an enduring mark on contemporary music. Areski recorded for BYG Records and remained a singular artistic voice throughout his career. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who cherished his music. For those wishing to revisit and celebrate his remarkable legacy, his 1973 album with Brigitte Fontaine, L’Incendie, is available in a definitive remastered edition on BYG Records - link in bio 🔗 #Areski

Number 470 Listening to my whole vinyl collection. Camembert Électrique - Gong Released October 1971 Recorded during the full moons of May, June and September 1971 Chez Michel Magne at Strawberry Studios Herrouville, France. I got the remastered copy of this recently to replace my almost paper thin copy that I’ve been playing for almost 45 years. The packaging, production and sound are all top quality and teamed with my Rega P3 It’s really cheering me up on my sick bed. Unfortunately though I can’t find music on instagram to match so I’ve got the nearest I could. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love this album, I’ve certainly worn the T-shirt plenty. I got this not long after the Flying Teapot album when I was about 15ish. An amazing mix of prog rock, Freeform jazz, poetic lyrics and space/spaced madness. This cemented my love for space rock, the Planet gong, Daevid Allen and Pot head pixie related stuff. The gong universe is a great place to escape to and forget your troubles. This album released in 1971 introduces some of the aspects of the expansive Gong and Daevid Allen universe, such as Radio Gnome and Selene. Every tracks a winner so it’s difficult to pick highlights but I will . Of all the tracks, And you tried so hard is the one that could have been released as a single. Highlight Tracks are: I’ve been stone before, Tropical fish/Selene, Mr Long Shanks/O mother/I am your fantasy. If space rock jazz fusion from a French commune living Australian poet is your thing, you’ll love this. Too niche? Of course not! Gentlemen... Attention... I’ve been stoned before In Saint John’s Wood crematorium I fell down with boredom Knee deep in the snow... I’ve been stoned before... In the Prague, in the Hague... Or was it another... ? I’ve bin stoned Before... #gong #daevidallen #regaresearchuk #prog #camembertelectrique

Mazette, écoutez l’intro de Don’t Knock My Love ! Come on Big Pink !
