Teaching my oldest daughter Maya freediving and watching her become such a natural in the water, finding her own connection to it, makes my heart so full. There’s something very special about sharing this part of my world with her 💙

Her second day and her first time diving in the blue hole .

For those wondering why I’m using only one fin: I had an accident back in July, and my foot still isn’t fully healed. During longer sessions, I need to take the fin off to give it a break. 🫶

Perspective.

Two months away from the water, for the first time in years, gave me more than I expected.

After my scooter accident, I had to step away from diving and focus on recovering. I was supposed to be in Cyprus by now to join the World Championships, but I chose to withdraw. There will be other opportunities.

Being on land made me realise just how much the water means to me. But it also made me appreciate everything outside of it in a way I haven’t for a long time. I want more of that too. More time on land, time to ground myself, spend time with people I love, do other things, be somewhere else, and let life have more space beyond diving.

Maybe that’s the perspective I came back with. I don’t need to choose between the two. I can love the water deeply and still want a bigger life around it.

Coming back, my mind feels clearer and lighter somehow. I feel mentally stronger, and I notice things differently. The water feels fresh again, and being able to move freely in it after such a painful time on land feels incredibly special.

My body is still adapting. I can’t use fins yet, but I can already feel the improvement, little by little.

Somewhere in this shift of perspective, I’ve discovered a joy for deeper hangs. When I’m not chasing depth, there’s more space to pause, simply be there. Gasping at the Arch, with a little more time to take it all in. It’s beautiful and mesmerising.

For now, there’s no pressure to make up for lost time. No need to be anywhere else.

Maybe stepping away from something you love can give you a new way of seeing it.

What we love can shape us deeply.

It can give us direction, purpose, and a place to grow.

But somewhere along the way, we can start measuring ourselves through it, attaching our identity to it, and believing it is the thing that defines us.

The question is not whether we should love less.
It is whether we can stay whole while loving deeply.
