Close to Home by Tish Murtha and Kuba Ryniewicz @balticgateshead is a lesson in Geordie identity, culture and heritage.

It’s the Northern grit we hear about and the stories passed down about the places we think we know.

But I’ll be honest, I didn’t realise quite how tough things were in the 70s.

You read and hear about Thatcherism and deindustrialisation. But nowadays you get folks who reminisce about the ‘good old days’.

What I saw wasn’t necessarily a picture of the ‘Great’ Britain I think Britain sold, or claimed to represent, to the world. I’m not sure they were all that good. Is that too controversial to say?

In Elswick Kids I saw hardship and struggle. I also saw and laughter, the kind that sparks through the eye, and I saw community, the kind that is there for one another. In the age of polarisation and divided communities, I think this is what people hold on to most and miss most about the ‘good old days’.

And yes, the two can coexist.

There is a strange beauty in the struggle because even throughout it, life carries on.

‘History doesn’t necessarily repeat itself. But it sure does rhyme.’ It’s a quote from @coachbennett (sorry not sorry, I had to bring running into it). But it feels particularly relevant here. Because so much of what Tish captured, the photographs, the challenges, the realities of everyday life, feels strangely familiar to today. Only this time, the government has managed to find a scapegoat.
