“A subtle magic unfolds in Figueroa’s paintings, where figures appear alongside shadow selves, herbs, and small lives, moving in quiet metamorphosis. Rooted in her Andean heritage, her work traces delicate reciprocity between human and nonhuman forms through cycles of care, vulnerability, and transformation. Everyday interiors become stages for ritual, as herbal baths, egg cleansings, and lunar planting unfold as intimate acts of repair and attentiveness, while surrealist tableaux gather figures and symbols shaped by Catholic iconography and folk traditions. Delicate lines, as fine as an ant’s leg or a single strand of hair, delineate forms and guide narrative scenes with quiet precision.”

We are thrilled to welcome Mar Figueroa, Painting/Printmaking MFA ’26, as the 2026 Community Engaged Teaching Fellow. This fellowship, a partnership between the Department of Art and Design and the Yale School of Art, is designed to foster community engagement and meaningful student connections through the arts. Mar will join the Department of Art and Design to teach painting and drawing and to develop a community art program that connects our students with the local community. Please help us welcome Mar to the University of New Haven!

Mar Figueroa is an Ecuadorian-born artist whose work traces shifting relationships between human and nonhuman life, where bodies, landscapes, and spirits exist in constant exchange. Rooted in Andean Montubio traditions and vernacular spiritual practices, her work draws from lineages in which agricultural knowledge, herbal medicine, and ritual converge, often blending Catholic belief with shamanic cosmologies. These frameworks shape her understanding of materiality and relationality, informing an approach in which bodies, substances, and environments are continuously transformed. Figueroa constructs layered surfaces as sites of accumulation and metamorphosis, where human and nonhuman presences dissolve into one another, generating porous, sensorial spaces of intimacy, care, and desire.

Her work has been presented at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and Sotheby’s Institute of Art; she is the recipient of a MacDowell Fellowship, National Arts Club Fellowship, Mahler & LeWitt Studios Awardee and Forbes 30 Under 30, and holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the Yale School of Art.

What arrives on the shoreline feels like correspondence from the ocean: omens disguised as fish, seashells whispering secrets, and mermaid’s purses, the egg cases of rays, skates, and sharks, remnants of new life.

Using the form of the ocarina, a wind instrument and vessel for breath, I bring these egg cases into sound, listening for what they might carry from the depths.
