Last week, the School of Art community gathered in Hastings Hall at the Yale School of Architecture for our fourth-annual Convocation—a yearly gathering that starts each academic year from a place of understanding and connection.

Beginning with a welcome by Dean Pinder, the event centered around a panel conversation, which came after presentations on June Jordan’s life and work. Panelists and presenters included Alexandria Smith (@alexandriasmithstudio), Assistant Professor in Painting/Printmaking and Director of Undergraduate Studies; Vinson Cunningham (@vinsoncunningham), staff writer at The New Yorker and Critic in Photography; Erica Edwards, Chair of Black Studies at Yale and Professor of English & Black Studies; and Roderick Ferguson, Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

Second-year MFA student in Painting/Printmaking, Mar Figueroa (@bymarfigueroa), joined the panel, and presentations were interspersed with poetry readings by MFA students Faye Wei Wei (@fayeweiwei) and Bryan Fernández (@Bryanfernandez.studio). Alexandria Smith concluded her presentation with the central principle she takes from Jordan’s work: “We have a responsibility to dream beyond what we’ve been given.”

Many thanks to the Convocation Committee for their work in planning this year’s event! The Convocation Committee is comprised of Maria De Los Angeles (@delosangelesart), Critic, Assistant Director in Painting and Printmaking and MFA ‘15, Nontsikelelo Mutiti (@nontsimutiti), Assistant Professor, Director of Graduate Studies in Graphic Design and MFA ‘12, John Pilson (@johnpilson), Senior Critic in Photography and MFA ‘93, and Alexandria Smith (@alexandriasmithstudio), Assistant Professor in Painting/Printmaking and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Art.

From everyone at MacDowell, we thank everyone who came out for this year’s New Hampshire Benefit! You helped make the evening an absolute, unmitigated delight in – and for – every sense.

We were thrilled to gather, converse, break bread, and celebrate with over 120 of our supporters, friends, neighbors, artists-in-residence, and board members to raise more than $65,000 in support of our mission. Through their generosity, we are able to continue to provide time, space, and care to the 300-plus artists awarded MacDowell Fellowships each year.

If you, dear reader, would like to support future artists at MacDowell, please go to MacDowell.org/Donate.

The New Hampshire Benefit Committee was co-chaired by Sarah Garland-Hoch and Monica Lehner and included the following generous individuals: Andi Axman, Ellen and Ed Bernard, Eleanor Briggs, Ellen and Thomas Draper, Amelia Dunlop, Peter and Katherine Frid, Frank Guerra and Scott Manning, James Georgopoulos, Kit Henry, Rosemary James, Emily Noelle Lambert, Dave and Terry Martland, Mollie Miller, Jessica Quinn, and Jamie Trowbridge.

And we thank our sponsor @HarrisvilleDesigns.
