Cut Paper Drawing, 2026
Paper, wood, char

Nathan Byrne

This was also in WWDTSG w/ @csayerbrooks

I’ve been dealing with this semi-circular composition of Gordon Matta-Clark for a while now. It felt really good to find my way with this one and the other wall-mounted cut paper drawing for this occasion, and to circle ⭕️ back to Matta-Clark with a pair of works ♾️

As part of WHICH WAY DOES THE SPIRIT GO, a two-person exhibition of @csayerbrooks and @byrnenate at 22 North Gallery May 22 - June 20, 2026 ♾️

I love a spontaneous sculpture, a sparse material list, and staging work directly on the floor. I believe this is my first one-word title in a while, but that used to be a thing too. In my first year of grad school @umstamps all my projects were one word: Threshold, Elision, and Passage.

There’s a nod to Eva Hesse with this one, thinking of her 💛

As part of WHICH WAY DOES THE SPIRIT GO, a two-person exhibition of @csayerbrooks and @byrnenate at 22 North Gallery May 22 - June 20th ♾️

This handmade sign for a slide library was found @sfsu_school_of_art while I was finishing my undergrad 2015-2017. I’ve been enjoying this object for a while and figured I’d make a work with it at some point.

The image is a detail of a sculpture I made while a student artist-in-residence @recologyair in 2017. The photo was taken by my friend @daniel__southard, an ethereal portrayal of my installation of light sculptures and whatnot, as reflected in a lenticular lens 🩶

Words Mean More Than They Did Before, 2026
Plywood, steel, stone, graphite

Nathan Byrne

As part of WHICH WAY DOES THE SPIRIT GO, a two-person exhibition of @csayerbrooks and @byrnenate at 22 North Gallery @22_northart from May 22- June 20, 2026. This work emanates from the Jessica Pratt song “Bushel Hyde,” which the title for this exhibition also derives from. The title the exhibition and the song it came from set the witchy and otherworldly tone for our show and we are are both grateful for the work which was able to be pulled from that fecund and poetic space.

Bushel Hyde was Jessica Pratt’s pet name for her apartment where she wrote much of her first album-at the corner of Bush and Hyde St. in SF. Oddly, both Casey and I had lived within blocks of that corner around the same time. The topography of the SF Bay Area and the spiraling words of Bushel Hyde are engraved into the nonagon of plywood in my handwriting. The words are darkened with graphite and graphite powder from this process is nesting in the stone. The spiritual location of Bush and Hyde St. lies at the heart of this work 🩶

Huge thanks to my wonderful artist friends who shared skies with me for this work! This was a beautiful opportunity to make something in a collaborative way with folks who have more of a lens-based approach than I do. Art is essentially a shared activity, it’s social activity. I’m interested in centering that more in practice ☁️

I found some cloud panels months back and got some assistance building out panels from @captaincarlsbad and some crucial advisement from @studio_souterre on how to properly adhere and cut the images to neatly fit the shaped panels. This is a process I would love to pursue again in other projects and so happy to find my way with friends ⛅️

Thanks @andy.kajie for printing help!

(Untitled) Cut Paper Drawing, 2026

Paper, wood, char

Nathan Byrne

As part of WHICH WAY DOES THE SPIRIT GO, a two-person exhibition of @csayerbrooks and @byrnenate at 22 North Gallery May 22 - June 20, 2026 ♾️

This work is in response to an early Gordon Matta-Clark cut drawing: (Untitled) Cut Drawing , 1974. Mine has altered the format of the object to vertical rather than horizontal and is drawn by laser engraving the edges of 1000 paper cut-offs from a paper cut down of 12” x 18” paper which needed to be
11” x 17” for the riso printer. I ended up with two stacks of 1000 cut-offs and made an object with each stack of a thousand.

Matta-Clark made his cut drawings by clamping stacks of paper and “drawing” into these stacks using a router. These were works in themselves while also serving the double-duty as sketches for proposed building cuts.

This unfinished cherry frame was fabricated by my colleague and friend Carly Lowe @captaincarlsbad . I was also assisted by my friend and former student Oliver St. Cyr @thecreativevulcan in the design of the vector files for the laser engraving 🌀

ALL PARTS WORKS A PART, 2026
Vintage slide magazines

Nathan Byrne

As part of WHICH WAY DOES THE SPIRIT GO, a two-person exhibition @22_northart featuring work by @csayerbrooks and @byrnenate which ran May 22-June 20, 2926

The titled is borrowed from a Gordon Matta-Clark index card from his archive held @canadiancentreforarchitecture. This work is one of the three artworks referencing or paraphrasing Matta-Clark, an artist I continue to circle back to.

The work appearing to the left (Untitled) Cut Paper Drawing is another of these three which made it into WWDTSG. More on the cut paper drawings soon 🩶

These slide magazines were manufactured by Argus and Airequipt in the 50’s and early 60’s and became quickly outmoded at the onset of the slide carousel. Favorite slide magazine: Mag 2 Pets we Have Known ♾️

I found this surface while talking to my soon-to-be-beloved, 2026

Tabletop, printed images

Nathan Byrne

As part of WHICH WAY DOES THE SPIRIT GO, a two-person exhibition featuring work by @csayerbrooks and @byrnenate at @22_northart (May 22-June 20, 2026) ♾️

This is another artwork from the exhibition looking back at this fecund time of my student artist residency @recologyair. The majority of the images used to compose this work are taken by my friend @daniel__southard (who appears in the 5th photo). We were up late the night before the opening and he took a great deal of searching explorative photos of the inner and outer worlds of my artworks in the exhibition titled “I Wish I Knew for True” which opened In May of 2017 alongside exhibitions by my cohort-mates @carriehott and @cybelelyle. I’m so grateful to be able to look back through work nearly a decade later 🌀

And yes, I found this surface while talking to a dear one, who will always be beloved 🩵

I’ve Been Staring Into Space, 2017-26

Various objects, light

As part of WHICH WAY DOES THE SPIRIT GO, a two-person exhibition featuring work by @csayerbrooks and @byrnenate at 22 North Gallery @22_northart (May 22-June 20, 2026)

This is another older work which was part of my exhibition at my student artist residency @recologyair in 2017 titled “I Wish I Knew for True”

I updated the date of this one because the amber-toned handmade glass on the left hand side was beautifully tinned by @colinhunter_designs and expertly re-mounted by @captaincarlsbad for the WWDTSG exhibition 🪟

SUNRISE SUNSET, 2026

Ink, pigment, acrylic, graphite, on raw canvas

Casey Sayer Brooks & Nathan Byrne

As part of WHICH WAY DOES THE SPIRIT GO a two-person exhibition at 22 North Gallery @22_northart featuring @csayerbrooks & @byrnenate (May 22-June 20, 2026) 🌀

This shaped canvas was acquired by Nathan Byrne and he attempted a text work w/ a graphite crayon in the wee hours of the morning before an exhibition opening in the prior Fall season. The text and typeface of SUNRISE & SUNSET was borrowed from a scarce Sol Lewitt book of the artist’s photos of sunrises and sunsets from his home in Praiano, Italy.

There was a mishap in scale and registration on the right side of the canvas and it was laid away at 2:30 am on October 9th, 2025 until it was picked up to undergo a process of erasure by both artists using kneaded erasers. Casey left with the canvas and about a week before the opening of WHICH WAY DOES THE SPIRIT GO, Casey brought this painting to its current transcendent state from her outdoor studio 🌱

You can faintly see the text scrawled by Nate
left panel: SUNRISE & SUNSET
center: LOVE U MISS U
right panel: SUNRIS
