In this session we will be joined and guided by the beautiful spirit and profound musical energy of Byron Wallen. A magnetic educator and truly brilliant artist, Byron will help us to trace the rhythmic foundations of musical culture(s). He will compel us to see the ways in which rhythm functions as technology.

Rhythm Race Revolution (RRR) is an 8-week course with Aditi Jaganathan that uses music and its attendant cultural texts, as a site of deep study, through which ideas of race, gender, colonialism, healing and transformative justice are collectively explored. It is a radical learning space tracing the sonic(s) of resistance.

What a week! Wednesday was unreal – playing with Jon Batiste and Chineke Orchestra. Then Friday over a meal @trinitylaban with John McLaughlin (he had fish, I had a smash burger!), we got deep into In a Silent Way. I also told him about the time I literally sprinted across Tokyo to find a copy of Shakti: Natural Elements The man is a legend – he signed every single album I had! 🙏🎸

Now, all that energy leads to Sunday night: bringing Ethio‑jazz together with West Javanese gamelan at Jamboree with Sekar Enggal and Hendrawati. Two musical worlds, one magical connection. Hope to see you there!

This week on BBC Radio 3 we pay tribute to two much-missed legends of jazz: Miles Davis, born 100 years ago this week, and Sonny Rollins, whose death at the age of 95 was announced the same day. Byron Wallen and band celebrated their legacy live in the studio with this gloriously jazzy mash-up of Miles Davis's U 'n' I and Sonny Rollins's Doxy.

All this week on ‘Round Midnight, @sowetokinch is celebrating the centenary of Miles Davis, one of the most influential figures in 20th-century music, as part of Miles Davis 100 on Radio 3.

From Monday to Thursday, Soweto has invited four musicians to select three of their favourite Miles records and share how he has influenced them.
