After competing at the 100th Blackpool Dance Festival and taking home first place in both Ballroom Formation and Latin Formation, the BYU Ballroom Dance Company traveled to India.

For dancer Ava Mecham, a new culture and meaningful connections changed the way she sees the art of dance. Mecham quickly found herself appreciating the opportunity to meet people and experience a different way of life. The team learned from traditional Indian dancers and participated in outreach activities with communities throughout the country.

Through performing for children and dancing at a home for women facing challenges, Mecham discovered how deeply dance can connect people.

“Sometimes the greatest moments in your life are not when you are out there winning titles,” Mecham said. “Sometimes it is when you can connect authentically with other people in the world.”

Life is full of unexpected twists, a lesson dance education major Bronte Hopkins learned firsthand during her time at Brigham Young University. Originally planning to study physical therapy, her involvement in dance projects quickly changed her mind.

“The more I studied professional dancers and their injuries and recoveries, the more I realized I wanted to be on the front end in education and injury prevention,” Hopkins said. “After my internship experience, I switched to dance education.”

In the fall, Hopkins will return to BYU’s College of Fine Arts and Communications as a faculty member, where she will teach contemporary dance.

This summer, the International Folk Dance Ensemble (IFDE) and Mountain Strings traveled to Belgium, Romania and Hungary.

Reflecting on the experience of performing both American folk and international dances, IFDE member Carly Wanlass shared, “When we travel internationally, we meet the people we are representing, and we can actually get to know them, which makes performing more impactful and meaningful. It really opens your perspective as to why we do what we do!”

Above all, the tour became a celebration of global community and shared spirit. “I hoped that people could see how joyful life is,” Wanlass added. “Dance is a way to connect with people and share who you are with them.”
