What’s been happening in the Political Science Department??Just a couple of weekends ago, Dr. Brown’s Politics of Public Lands class took a jaunt down to Moab to enjoy the scenery and gain some insights on the area’s environmental politics.

Reflecting on the trip, Jayne Connolly said, “I’m grateful for the opportunity I had to visit Moab with Dr. Brown and my Poli 325 class. Combining my love for the outdoors, with my passion for politics made this an experience I will always remember from my time at BYU.

In visiting Moab, I was given the chance to reflect on balancing land preservation, honoring Utah’s communities, and providing public access to many national treasures.

The trip allowed me to deepen my understanding of national policies and their distinctive approach to managing and preserving public lands. This experience is especially valuable as I prepare to work for Senator Curtis this upcoming Winter semester and approach national legislation. Utah has a unique relationship with public lands, and I am interested in specializing in this policy area.” by @byupolisci

Political scientist Jessica R. Preece (BA ’03) was reading the parable of the sheep and goats in Matthew 25 when she came up with the idea for a course: The Politics of Care.

“It struck me, all of these things that the Savior talks about—things like caring for the hungry, thirsty, strangers, and those in prison—are also active, current debates in politics,” says Preece.

Huge congratulations to BYU Political Science student Dallin Bundy for being named a Truman Scholar!

Through his work on campus and beyond, Dallin has made depolarization and civil dialogue a focus of his public service efforts. “Political science at BYU taught me the importance of informed decision-making and being a critical data consumer,” he shared. Classes like POLI 210 showed him how our democratic system was built to withstand debate and thrive through passionate deliberation.

“Our faith values belonging, and our engagement with one another can be robust yet peaceful,” he said. “President Nelson’s call for peacemakers has really impacted how I view civic engagement.”

We’re so proud of you, Dallin! by @byupolisci

We’re so proud of our students for representing BYU so well and grateful to the incredible alumni and professionals who made this trip possible. Can’t wait for next year! 👏
Applications for next year’s trip will open during Winter 2026 — keep an eye out!

At BYU, Drinkwater served as editor of the Political Review and president of the User Experience Design Association. She has gained invaluable experience as a teaching assistant, research assistant, and student fellow with the Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy. Meet another one of our 2025 Political Science Salutatorians, Abby Child! Reflecting on her journey at BYU she shares,

“My experience as a political science student has played a large part in shaping who I am and how I see the world. I am forever grateful for faculty and mentors who have invested so much in me and my fellow students. As a student, teaching assistant, research assistant, and intern, I had invaluable experiential learning opportunities that helped me better understand the world around me, explore potential careers, and gain confidence in my abilities. I learned how to be a disciple scholar, and I feel confident that I can make a difference in the world. I will be attending the Master in Public Policy program at Georgetown’s McCourt School of Public Policy in the fall.”

Say hello to one of our 2025 Political Science Salutatorians, Ellie Mitchell! As she wraps up her time at BYU, she reflects on what this chapter has meant to her:

“I’ve truly loved my time as a political science major at BYU. One of the most rewarding parts of my experience at BYU has been engaging in research through working for professors and through the Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy. These opportunities have helped me develop valuable technical skills, present at academic conferences, and even co-author a published paper. I am incredibly grateful for all of the mentorship and support I’ve received from the political science faculty throughout my time here. After graduation, I plan to take a gap year and work while applying to political science Ph.D. programs in the fall.”

Congratulations Ellie! 🎓 by @byupolisci
