What started as a required Political Science 300 statistics project became research with national impact!

Kate Church and Rachel Gammon analyzed Braver Angels data to better understand what helps reduce political polarization. Their research was presented at the Braver Angels National Convention this June in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and later cited in the Deseret News article, “In Philadelphia, the spirit of 1776 meets the politics of 2026.”

“It was truly rewarding to see our findings covered in the Deseret News after all the work we put into the project,” Kate shared.

Congratulations to Kate, Rachel, and faculty mentors Doug Atkinson and Eliza Hawkins on this exciting accomplishment! 👏

A meaningful BYU connection at this year’s
University Awards💙

Artist Jorge Cocco received BYU’s Honorary Alumni Award last week, and joining the dinner was Noel Reynolds, emeritus BYU political science professor. What a delight to discover that Reynolds was the missionary who introduced Cocco to the gospel in Argentina many years ago, even before the Church was official in that country.

The two posed in front of a reproduction of Cocco’s artwork “The Christus” at the Hinckley Center.

The evening also recognized Bruce Hafen with a Distinguished Alumni Award. Hafen is an alumnus of the BYU Political Science Department.

Congratulations!
