Some things are too meaningful to leave unworn.

I brought my mother’s veil to @zoan.ash to be preserved through hand embroidery — keeping the memory of the original piece, while giving it a new life.

I had this idea at 3am about bringing different disciplines of craftsmanship together and looking at what already connects them: the time, handwork and intention behind how they’re made.

It was one of those ideas that could have very easily stayed in my notes app.

I brought it to @shivanisudhir, then sat down with @sahilshettigar to talk through the vision, while my sister @zainahaquex and I kept bouncing ideas back and forth. Somewhere along the way, pairing each look with a rug came together almost instinctively.

Then came the slightly ambitious part: Jaipur Rugs.

I pitched the idea not really knowing if they’d even see the message. I’m still new to building @seraicollective, still finding my place in Dubai, but I’ve learned that sometimes you just have to ask before you feel fully ready. Sooo I was persistent, and somehow, it came together.

What surprised me most was the pairings. We imagined contrast, but similar colours, shapes and motifs kept finding one another. Pieces made by different hands, in different places and through completely different processes somehow looked like they belonged together.

That became my favourite part.

Watching something that existed in my head become these images was very special, but more than anything, this project reminded me that building something creative is often just following an idea, sharing it before it feels perfect, and trusting the people around you to add something you couldn’t have made on your own.

I think that’s what Common Thread came to mean to me in the end—not just the thread between different forms of craft, but between people, ideas and places too.

We styled @flauntarchive and @zoan.ash against the Raashan rug by Mamta from the Manchaha collection. Layers of colour, pattern, and unexpected detail bring the two together, embracing an eclectic nature.

I don’t think I ever really felt ready to start Serai.

There was so much uncertainty around me at the time, and honestly, a lot of uncertainty in me too. I kept thinking maybe I needed more experience, more connections, a better plan.

But if I had waited until I felt completely ready, I don’t think Serai would exist.

A lot of building this has just been doing things scared. Sending the message anyway. Asking people I admire to work with me. Making decisions I had no idea how to make. Getting things wrong, changing my mind, and sometimes having to admit that something I really believed in just wasn’t working.

There have been a lot of moments where I’ve questioned whether I know what I’m doing.

I still do.

But somewhere along the way, this little idea became real. I’ve made work I’m genuinely proud of, met and collaborated with people I admire, brought people together, and helped more people discover designers I really believe in.

And I think I’m slowly learning that maybe you’re never supposed to feel completely ready.

You just care enough to keep figuring it out.

another trip around the sun 🪷

this year taught me a lot about doing things before i felt ready.

i launched a business, met incredible people, made mistakes, learned constantly, and kept going even when i felt scared, unsure and completely out of my depth.

my wish for this next year is to find community. i hope more people find their way to what we’re building at Serai and connect through art, culture, and shared curiosity.

and i hope to meet more people who are finding themselves through creativity, just as i am.
