Took our puppy on a walk this evening out the back yard.

‘Tis AUTUMN!

Not a typical AUTUMN in the NORTH of MI.

We had abnormally warm days this month.

Recent days felt like SUMMER. Odd … but welcomed.

Thus, we had dandy lions.

Yes, Dandy Lions and coloring leaves
at the same time.

The likes of such I don’t remember - a contrast in seasons merging.

Summer is sometimes seen in the other seasons.

Dandy Lions don’t normally appear in October up here.

Seasons still surprise me such still.

Life is such …

  THOUGH I WOULD LIKE
  MY SEASONS
  TO FIT INTO
  PREDICTABLY PERIODS
  of TIME,
SEASONS DO not so SUCH APPEASE.

I welcome dandy lions
and orange leaves
and puppies
in autumn eves.

TRUE STORY … I was standing around yesterday with our dog Greta🐶 on #mackinackisland while my wife Jace @jadranka_isabel_photography was taking photos of engagements. 💍

I found myself in a conversation with a grandmother and her 13-year-old granddaughter from New Orleans, due to the cuteness of Greta. 🐶

The wonderfully outgoing granddaughter was into theater and country music. She was sharing her extensive playlist with me, due to my interest in her interests.

It was genuinely a timeless minute.

At one point, she mentioned a DOLLY PARTON song in her playlist. I said, “did you know she wrote over 3000 songs?”

  She smiled and with awe
  so proudly declared
 “and yes,
  SOME OF THEM
  WENT VIRAL!“

I smiled, drank in the in the moment
and said …

“yes, some of her songs went VIRAL.”

Viral INDEED!

How much is that doggie in the window? Endless dollars!
Our hearts’ are recently wonderfully wrecked by Winifred Anne (Winni Anne for short). Anne with an E, of course!
She’s tuckered out by travels and adventuring from Iowa to Northern Michigan.
Puppies do a heart good.

After our son’s graduating in MN, Jace and I curated a visit to our much loved Stevens Point. WI. We called “Point” home from 14-16. It’s always meaningful and calibrating when we split up our drives to and from MN here.

While Jace was capturing photos of families at nearby photogenic places, I popped into one of most appreciated places in “Point.” It’s “Blue Moon Books & Antiques.”

I was an assistant manager at a Walden Books in my college years. Still one of my most relished roles ever! My bookstore pallet is developed!

Allow me a telling of this quirky bookstore that’s worth a trip a ways off interstate 39 in the center of WI.

First of all, don’t give it a go if you like sterile and perfect stores that display books as if they’re staged in an open house hosted by a realtor on a Saturday morning in suburbia. Blue Moon is more piles and more piles of books next to overflowing shelves organized in a wonderfully discombobulated fashion as to demand hunting and mining.

I was delighted to find the owner Steve still the greeter by the door. His store survived COVID! I feared it may have not, so I called ahead. I celebrate the survival.

He’s pivoted well to selling treasures online. Take that Amazon and Barnes & Nobles!

He actually knows about the books and where they are to be found in the stacks and shelves. He can walk you to obscure authors and editions if you ask.

He delayed his closing to allow me more wandering. After closing, I eavesdropped his conversation with what sounded like professors from Madison who visited upon the recommendings of their students.

I left with a double bagged stack of books all older than me. Not just written before my birth, but printed before.

I would be fond of old books being able to tell their stories. Not the author’s written story, but their story of where they’ve been the last many decades. How long were they shelved and stacked at Blue Moon? Have they been read once, twice or more? Were they read aloud or silently? These stories - the stories of books - should be sought.

Go get you a double bagged stack of books at Blue Moon. Tell Steve hi. He’ll be there.

So proud of our oldest son Chantry upon his graduation from South West Christian High School!
He’s brilliant and caring, with a great love for the Lord and is a well that has proven to be far deeper than I could have hoped for!
He’s off to @gcu this fall to study theology. Go on, my son! @c_coffield08

We said our goodbyes to our beloved Bertha yesterday. Lots and lots of tears in the midst of the surprising grief of losing her.

For a brief moment I wondered if the grief was really worth it. The moment was brief. As tearful as we are, the moments of joy she brought far outweighs the grief of losing her. She gave us twelve years of countless laughs and memorable moments.

Considering how often Jace and I travel, Bertha stayed with probably 30+ families and friends who cared for her. She never had pause to meet new people to win over with her charm.

February of ‘25, the vet gave her three months to live, considering her health. We started feeding her ice cream and steak and anything from the table we ate. We let her get away with far more than her younger years. She outlived expectations and milked it for all it’s worth. 😀

She loved her walks in all seasons, her window watching for the delivery trucks and anybody walking “her” street. We never broke her from being a yappy barker. She barked at every creature and machine that came into view of her window and every person that entered her home - including Jace and me.

We named her Bertha because Jace wanted a big dog. I negotiated and said “let’s get a little dog and give it a big name.”Bertha lived up to her big name.

Where she used to walk with us 3-5 miles several times a week, this spring she was good for mile long walks. She joyfully walked with us her mile even last weekend.

But her heath issues escalated quickly on Wednesday. All of a sudden she snow balled. We said goodbye to her in the care of a gracious vet Thursday afternoon in Traverse City - the city of her birth.

I wrestle with being so sad in the midst of so many tragedies in the world right now. But, it is what it is. 🙏🏼

Thanks, B! You made life so so very much more the richer. 🐶

Please, do not judge or mock me. 🙏🏻

A moment of transparency here. 🤔

Today I filled steering fluid in my ‘01 Volvo wagon. She’s the best car I’ve ever had! She’s at about 216k. Goal is 300k. She’s carried me well around passing eight years now.

She showed signs of needing such steering fluid, at least according to AI apps.

Some would say filling steering fluid - it’s as easy as changing a roll of toilet paper. I have to now agree. YouTube helped.

But for years, anything under the hood of a car caused unfounded fears. I had the likes of phobia for doing anything but maybe checking or adding oil or windshield washer fluid.

I know it seems irrational. It is and was. But, such occurs. Maybe you have irrational fears.

Hoping for you …

  May you metaphorically
  fill some steering fluid
  in areas that feared
  you much soon.

We recently had a blizzard in Northern Michigan that led to the cancellation of our Sunday Morning service.

So, Jace and I did a worship gathering live online. It was memorable. 🙌🏼

I was ill prepared for such an event. Most wouldn’t notice, but the audio was particularly terrible.

I’m spending time today on new gear that should well prepare us for livestreaming from anywhere with better audio.

Just an old dog learning …

I’m blending new gear with old gear. I tagged a few.
