This week I’ve had to say goodbye to my cat and best friend, Spider. He wasn’t just my best friend, he was my shadow, and I could have never imagined a better pet than him.

Spider was deeply intelligent and not like other cats I’ve ever met. He was tall and everyone that has ever met him immediately remarked on how he seems more like a panther than a cat.

When I was preparing to get a dog, I’ve learned about clicker training, and tried to learn it with Spider. He immediately understood it and I taught him many dog tricks. Even when we stopped training, pressing a clicker once would summon him from the outside, even blocks away he’d run back to me.

His intelligence drove people insane, because he knew precisely when it was food time. And he would let you know that you haven’t fed him, loudly meowing, until you finally fed him. I’ve heard he also had an affinity for scones, and his favorite human food were McDonald’s french fries, somehow.

Spider never wanted to leave my sight, and laid on me or around me for as long as I let him. I know cats are kind of antisocial, but Spider wasn’t. No, he needed to be around creatures. You ever see those videos of what dogs do when you leave them alone at home? That was Spider too. He’d meow loudly, into the void.

There are a million anecdotes on how Spider is a unique and loving cat, and so many people have experienced his unique way of love, and no matter how much I write down, I could never honor him enough.

He had heart worms, and kidney disease, usually two things that for sure do a cat in, but not Spider, oh no. In his old age of 18, or 19, he developed one of the rarest types of cancer that we know of in cats. And even then, he beat the odds of “maybe a couple weeks, a month” and gave me another 7 months. I’m forever grateful he gave me that time to honor him some more.
I will miss you, Spider. Thank you for telling me that you wanted to eat, every day.

C418’s beloved Minecraft soundtracks are coming to cassette on June 13th — pre-order limited edition box sets today, plus vinyl is stocked, link in bio.

As @c418, composer and producer Daniel Rosenfeld designs sounds to resonate in both physical and pixelated realms. Best known for his original soundtracks to Minecraft, the single best-selling video game (and now a major motion picture) of all time, he’s become a Billboard-charting artist with accolades from places like Vice and The Guardian likening his work to Erik Satie and Brian Eno. Just this past month, the soundtrack was inducted into the Library of Congress.

In 2015, after quietly self-releasing Minecraft Volume Alpha and Minecraft Volume Beta, Rosenfeld partnered with Ghostly International to reissue Minecraft Volume Alpha on vinyl and CD. In 2020, the soundtrack’s second installment, Minecraft Volume Beta, saw its first physical release as a double LP and CD. Both releases have since been repressed to fervent fan response, but never on cassette until now.

Out June 13th, the tapes are available separately and bundled in a limited edition box set now up for pre-order. The colorway for Minecraft Volume Alpha is an opaque Green, and Minecraft Volume Beta is an Orange color when purchased individually and with a Red shell in the box set. by @c418
