In our Fall issue, @ca5eyj0 writes about when a stone becomes more than a stone, its meaning transcends those core memories of rock hunting Lake Michigan’s beautiful beaches and connecting with family over a simple but powerful shared pursuit. 🌊 Featuring stunning photography by our good friend @bethpricephotography 👏🏼

To read Casey’s full story and check out more of Beth’s photography, grab a Fall Issue on our website at the link in our bio or get one at a regional store near you (full list on our website!). Below is an excerpt from Casey’s story — 🍂🍁🌊🌲

“Locally, they’re called hag stones. Small quirky rocks with naturally eroded holes. Hole-y stones imbued with holy properties, nature’s equivalent of an evil eye amulet, purported to offer healing, protection and a smattering of other ambiguous mystical qualities. But everything about ‘hag’ is ugly; the image invoked, the word on your tongue, the creep of it up your spine. Jodi and I defaulted to the slightly less pejorative ‘witches’ stone.’” taken in Lake Michigan by @ca5eyj0

today in burial: there’s a lightness to this story that i’m frankly straight up jealous of—this is ‘dearly departed’ by @ca5eyj0, a tale about…AWP baltimore? but with a spoooooky twist. and a certain burial alum even makes an appearance within…if this sounds annoying to you—well, you’re wrong, it rocks. now go read it at the l i n k in our bio! by @ca5eyj0

I publish essays (some of my favorite!) on Substack once a month. This one is a write up of the @ioniafreakfair and @billystrings , one of our favorite musicians. Link will be in my story for 24 hours! Many heartfelt thanks to my subscribers 🥰 by @ca5eyj0

August is almost over and I got lazy about sharing publications here, mostly because this was, until very recently, a private account. Anyway, I had an essay come out in JMWW and a short fiction in trampset and the links are on my website if you want to read more of my existential ramblings ✨ by @ca5eyj0

Somehow this is the only picture I captured at Billy String’s Ionia Freak Fair, which seems fitting. We were on our feet standing and dancing for eight hours straight, covered in dust and rain and surrounded by a bunch of fellow weirdos just digging bluegrass and good vibes and life. 🎶 by @ca5eyj0

Look! @barrelhousemag captured a shot of my husband and I dining outdoors in Michigan, shoveling parasite produce into our mouths, smoke curling into every fold of our tender pink lungs 🔥 by @ca5eyj0

This weekend the taco stand opened and I braved Lake Michigan and listened to local music and chilled with the fam. We are on the cusp of summer and all is right in this slice of the planet 🌮 🌊 🎶 💕 by @ca5eyj0

My essay “The Ghosts in My Machines” is out now in Gen X culture and lifestyle mag @geezermagazine !Special mentions in here to @empiremichigan and @southcarolinaaquarium I was so thrilled to be able to feature one of my favorite photos of my sister and I at Empire beach, circa 1984. This was the prefect home for this essay, and hope you’ll get your hands on a copy! by @ca5eyj0

Normally we go to the beach on Jodi’s birthday, but had to make it yesterday given the torrential rain today. Something about the sky crying feels right. She would have been 45. It’s been a rough few days, and I’m feeling blue and gray, too. My heart and life feels heavy, and this is all there is to say. 🩵 by @ca5eyj0

“We text each other this image of The Prince back and forth at all hours of the day and sometimes night, because The Prince is now an appropriate response to everything. We wonder what he’s up to, if his owner is Spanish or Italian. Maybe she’s Portuguese and tells him how doce he is.”
