POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

In our Fall issue, @ca5eyj0 writes about when a stone becomes more than a stone, its meaning transcends those core memories of rock hunting Lake Michigan’s beautiful beaches and connecting with family over a simple but powerful shared pursuit. 🌊 Featuring stunning photography by our good friend @bethpricephotography 👏🏼

To read Casey’s full story and check out more of Beth’s photography, grab a Fall Issue on our website at the link in our bio or get one at a regional store near you (full list on our website!). Below is an excerpt from Casey’s story — 🍂🍁🌊🌲

“Locally, they’re called hag stones. Small quirky rocks with naturally eroded holes. Hole-y stones imbued with holy properties, nature’s equivalent of an evil eye amulet, purported to offer healing, protection and a smattering of other ambiguous mystical qualities. But everything about ‘hag’ is ugly; the image invoked, the word on your tongue, the creep of it up your spine. Jodi and I defaulted to the slightly less pejorative ‘witches’ stone.’”

today in burial: there’s a lightness to this story that i’m frankly straight up jealous of—this is ‘dearly departed’ by @ca5eyj0, a tale about…AWP baltimore? but with a spoooooky twist. and a certain burial alum even makes an appearance within…if this sounds annoying to you—well, you’re wrong, it rocks. now go read it at the l i n k in our bio!

“We text each other this image of The Prince back and forth at all hours of the day and sometimes night, because The Prince is now an appropriate response to everything. We wonder what he’s up to, if his owner is Spanish or Italian. Maybe she’s Portuguese and tells him how doce he is.”

Find Casey Jo Graham Welmers’ (@ca5eyj0) mindblowing short, “The Prince,” in The Bulb Region today.

“Do you believe in the healing power of rocks and crystals? Of course you do, why else would you work here?”

“Other things that feel real: the drone of insects and rush of hot air circulating through the open gymnasium doors, the occasional squawk of exhausted woodwinds during Pomp and Circumstance, your intensely Catholic gym teacher slipping thoughts on marriage and family planning into his speech. A baby refusing to let the ceremony interrupt his riotous cries toward a distracted and indifferent world.”

I don’t know of another piece that captures so well that shimmery, liminal ‘between’ space of adolescence that feels like both the coldest and most comforting—a place you can’t stay but you never want to leave.

This is a god-damn gem and you should give it a read.

Happiest of birthdays to the best sister in the world. @ca5eyj0 I don’t know where I’d be without you. You not only are my sister, you are my rock. Even tho you are only 14 months older than me, I always have and always will look up to you. I can’t thank you enough for everything you have done and continue to do for me. I love you beyond words and can’t wait for the days we can vacation together again, go to concerts again or even just lay on our beautiful beaches on Lake Michigan. I hope your day is magical.
