Redefining the Relationship Between Architecture and the Garden
How a single change in level became an architectural gesture—connecting movement, landscape, and light.

A closer look at Scala San Filippo by caarpa, where a subtle shift in the terrain inspires a sculptural steel staircase and a delicate greenhouse, creating a seamless dialogue between the existing garden, architecture, and the surrounding landscape.

What do you think—can a staircase become more than just a means of movement?

Where surfaces become landscape.

For Genova Design Week 2026, Abet Laminati takes part in Punta San Lorenzo, the urban installation designed by caarpa that transforms Piazza San Lorenzo into a contemporary cliffscape inspired by the Ligurian coast.

Through colours, textures and patterns drawn from the Abet catalogue, the project reinterprets the Genoese tradition of inlay and reflects on the role of public space as a place for gathering, resting and sharing.

🟢 Scala San Filippo by @caarpa_ is An Espace Autre in Genoa 🟢

This is not a greenhouse. This is not a staircase. This isn’t even a garden. Scala San Filippo in Genoa, by caarpa, is a 40 sq. m. liminal, contemplative space in the heart of a private garden, where a pistachio-green sculptural staircase encounters rugged stone walls, glazed surfaces, reed screens, linen curtains, and chickens wandering among watering cans, gardening tools, and fragments of reclaimed marble.

Scala San Filippo eludes fixed definitions, simultaneously functioning as a staircase, greenhouse, garden, observatory, and domestic refuge—without fully becoming any of them. Treating the garden as a space of nature, memory, and heterotopia, caarpa embraces Foucault’s description of it as “the smallest parcel of the world and the totality of the world” (1986), carefully recalibrating a series of relationships: wilderness and construction, antiquity and contemporaneity, opacity and transparency, permanence and transformation.

In turn, Rosario Assunto described the garden as “neither pure nature nor pure artifice, but an aesthetic and ethical synthesis” (1988). Scala San Filippo embodies precisely this condition. Neither building nor landscape, neither object nor infrastructure, it operates as a device for transition, contemplation, and embodied movement. The greenhouse becomes less an enclosure than a threshold; the staircase, less an element of circulation than an invitation to wander. Ultimately, Scala San Filippo reminds us that architecture does not always require monumentality to reshape our perception of a place; sometimes, a single, carefully calibrated gesture is enough to redefine an entire world.

🔆 The Summer Refuge 👉 Episode 12: La California by @caarpa_ is a Salmon-Pink Maritime Refuge Rooted in Sardinia’s Industrial Heritage 🔆

Rooted in #nature, #rural landscapes, vernacular architecture, and closely connected to “disconnection,” “slow living,” and Martin Heidegger’s “Dasein”, The Summer Refuge series curated by Archt. for @archisearch focuses on seasonal houses that shelter time, #memory and dreams.

In the twelfth episode, we follow caarpa reimagining Sardinia’s #industrial #heritage through the transformation of California—a 60-square-metre former high-temperature cooking room within a historic tonnara, the traditional tuna-processing complex—into a pink-salmon #domestic #refuge by the #sea.

Along Sardinia’s Costa Verde, former tuna-processing tonnare shaped a unique industrial-domestic architecture tied to seasonal fishing, collective labour, and coastal climate. These complexes included double-height halls, patios, warehouses, and sleeping quarters, with the ‘California’ cooking rooms designed for extreme heat dissipation during tuna boiling. Though the industry has disappeared, many structures remain as abandoned or altered fragments embedded in coastal villages.

The project La California by caarpa reactivates one such building, previously subdivided into holiday units, by restoring its original full-height spatial generosity. A central concrete pillar remains as a trace of later modifications. The #renovation introduces a raw birch kitchen concealing services, an Orosei marble bench that doubles as seating and circulation, and a mezzanine bedroom. The rear patio features exposed brass plumbing for outdoor washing, while interiors use terrazzo and handmade turquoise tiles. A #pink façade connects the building to Sardinia’s geological palette of trachyte color traditions.

Shaped by the island’s industrial memory, the cycles of labour, and the seasonal rhythms of the sea, La California becomes a #maritime refuge entrusted to the warmth of #wood, the gravity of #concrete and the quiet sensuality of pink.

Scala San Filippo
In the heart of a private garden in Genoa, a slight difference in elevation provides an opportunity to redefine the relationship between architecture and landscape.
The soft colour and sculptural shape of the powder-coated iron staircase serves not only as a connection between two levels of the garden, but also as a true architectural statement that redefines the perception of the place.
Designed to blend in with and complement the staircase, the greenhouse fits harmoniously into the existing masonry context, creating a dialogue between the antique and the contemporary. The glass surfaces maintain a constant visual connection with the surrounding vegetation, and the light, delicate metal structure emphasises the transparency and brightness of the spaces.
The project as a whole restores the balance between nature and the built environment: the staircase becomes an experiential path that guides the gaze and body upwards, while the greenhouse becomes a space for rest and contemplation — a green microcosm that extends the life of the garden indoors.

The hens’ accommodation was kindly provided by Tresgal Farm.
