There will be no indictments in the death of Nolan Wells and people are hurting. 💔

A Jackson County, Mississippi grand jury unanimously returned a “no true bill,” finding insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges in connection with the 18-year-old’s death. The grand jury said the circumstances surrounding the discovery of Nolan’s body were consistent with drowning. However, the cause and manner of his death remain officially undetermined. @apnews

As those questions continue, there’s another conversation we don’t want to lose. When we discussed Nolan’s case on The Latest Word on Black News, we asked our panel: What can parents do right now? Check in — and ask the right questions.
Know your child’s friends AND their parents or guardians.
Know the coaches and adults your children spend time around.
Talk openly about race, culture and code-switching.
Teach your children to be observant.
Lean into your family’s values.
Trust your instincts.
And most importantly, create a relationship where your children know they can always talk to you.

For generations, Black parents have had “The Talk” with their children about navigating encounters with police. But is it time for another version of “The Talk” — this one about friendships, race and awareness?

The death of beloved teen, Nolan Wells, and the questions that remain surrounding the circumstances of his death, have sparked difficult conversations among Black families about what we teach our children as they navigate friendships across racial lines.

On this episode of The Latest Word, we’re bringing different generations to the table to talk about it.

How do we teach our children to recognize racism disguised as a “joke”?
Does code-switching influence what we teach them about fitting in?
And how do we encourage awareness without teaching fear?

Last Monday, I had to dust off the old golf clubs @KappaAlphaPsi to swing for a cause 💪🏾⛳️ It’s always a great experience to have a different “office” for the day, serving as a board member for the @BobHayesOfficial and representing @FieldsCadillac as a partner of the 24th Annual James “Coach” Day Scholarship. I might’ve lost a few balls 😂, but $2500 in scholarships for each student, is pretty much a win-win!
