There will be no indictments in the death of Nolan Wells and people are hurting. 💔

A Jackson County, Mississippi grand jury unanimously returned a “no true bill,” finding insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges in connection with the 18-year-old’s death. The grand jury said the circumstances surrounding the discovery of Nolan’s body were consistent with drowning. However, the cause and manner of his death remain officially undetermined. @apnews

As those questions continue, there’s another conversation we don’t want to lose. When we discussed Nolan’s case on The Latest Word on Black News, we asked our panel: What can parents do right now? Their answers became what we’re calling a Parent Action Plan. @askdrcharmain @caddy_tee @deardeanpublishing

We can’t control every environment our children will enter. But we can prepare them, stay connected to them and know more about the people and spaces surrounding them.

Swipe through our Parent Action Plan, save it and share it with another parent. Then tell us: What would you add to the list? ➡️ #nolan #nolanwells #parenting #justice #newsoftheday

For Nolan’s family, advocates and many supporters who have spent months calling for answers and accountability, this is not the news or outcome they were hoping for. Nolan’s family and its attorneys continue to question how he died and have called for further investigation. (CBS News)

Check in — and ask the right questions.
Know your child’s friends AND their parents or guardians.
Know the coaches and adults your children spend time around.
Talk openly about race, culture and code-switching.
Teach your children to be observant.
Lean into your family’s values.
Trust your instincts.
And most importantly, create a relationship where your children know they can always talk to you.

The things our kids see as “normal” among friends may look very different through a parent’s eyes. We asked our guests about code-switching — the experiences they’ve had with it and whether those experiences influence how they prepare their own children to navigate friendships and spaces where they may be one of only a few Black people.
@deardeanpublishing Myron J. Clifton shares what he noticed while watching his daughter’s generation interact — and why those experiences have shaped the conversations he believes parents need to have with their children about race, boundaries and the people they call friends.

The questions surrounding the death of Nolan Wells sparked our larger conversation: Are there things Black parents need to make sure their children understand as they navigate friendships across racial and cultural lines?

We’re talking about awareness, not fear — and making sure our children have the tools to recognize when something that has become “normal” shouldn’t be.

For generations, Black parents have had “The Talk” with their children about navigating encounters with police. But is it time for another version of “The Talk” — this one about friendships, race and awareness?

The death of beloved teen, Nolan Wells, and the questions that remain surrounding the circumstances of his death, have sparked difficult conversations among Black families about what we teach our children as they navigate friendships across racial lines.

On this episode of The Latest Word, we’re bringing different generations to the table to talk about it.

How do we teach our children to recognize racism disguised as a “joke”?
Does code-switching influence what we teach them about fitting in?
And how do we encourage awareness without teaching fear?

Licensed psychologist Dr. Charmain Jackman @askdrcharmain , author and publisher Myron Clifton @deardeanpublishing and father of three Travis Felder @caddy_tee join us for a candid conversation about what Black children may need to know before they walk out the door.

The Price is Right!!💰 🎫 @therealpriceisright

Who would’ve guessed that I’d hear those 3 famous words with my name attached: BRITTANY JONES COME ON DOWN!!!

That’s right-in a room full of people and producers, I had the confidence to speak. (Next to my mama, my biggest cheerleader) I was confident in who I was and where I came from, and I was clear on what I wanted. So, I got picked!

And when I stepped in front of the mic, in front of Drew Carey @drewfromtv and the audience, I was a little shaky in making bids. Even after working on TV for nearly 16 years, I was NERVOUS! I mean, look how I kept saying the man’s name! (Clip 2) ➡️▶️😂😂😂

Then I began to boldly shout my bids, even though I never won the bid to run onto the stage to play a game. 🙃 It was still a win for me because I was prepared either way. I’m sharing what I know in my new ebook so that whenever it’s your turn to step in front of a microphone, you own it!

It was such a fun experience being a contestant, and not only did I get to help my mom check off an item on her bucket list—the lesson from it was valuable…always just be YOU when it’s your turn! I hope this motivates you for the week! I’ll share more of my experience in my next blog! My nephew heard me say:
“People don’t read anymore!”

He said:
“Um… Titi… have you met my teachers?” 😅

Keep in mind that he’s an award-winning student who’s at the top of his class in reading. So, for some Orlando Science Center @orlandosciencecenter tickets, he’s trying to sell 10 copies of my ebook. And since it’s his birthday month, I told him we’d see if the community could help him reach his goal!

I remember when my nephew was bored one afternoon while his grandparents were babysitting — so my mom handed him two Mike the Friendly Firefighter coloring sheets.
One was Mike standing tall next to the car from The Wild Car Fire, and the other — Mike’s magic shoes! 👟✨

Two reminders for every child:
1️⃣ Use your imagination. You’ve got magic shoes too — they can take you anywhere your dreams lead.
2️⃣ Be brave and serve others, because when you use your gifts to help your community, you make the world a better place.

Sometimes, a few crayons and a story are all it takes to spark courage and creativity. 💛 #mikethefriendlyfirefighter #mikefreeland #readingisfun #storytime #FlashbackFriday #coloring #art #childrensbooks #authorsofinstagram #inspire #firefighters #firstresponders #awardwinning
