…I tried yoga once. It wasn’t for me. I much prefer hobbies where I might die 😂

I also tell everyone I ride with: If 💩 gets western—get it on video.

But in all reality, the equestrian lifestyle isn’t always sunshine and rainbows 🌈. This was a project mare I had been working on, who up until this day did everything I asked of her and had been excelling on the trails. She had some quirks, but had never blown up under saddle. However with horses, nothing is a guarantee.
I had to be extra careful where she went after she had shown me this side of her. I’m happy to say she found an amazing home with someone who will continue her training (And yes, I was fully transparent with this incident).

Everyone talks about how magical Montana summers are, but nobody talks about the absolute PANIC of trying to cram an entire year’s worth of fun into the four months before winter comes back to humble you. 😂

Suddenly every weekend feels like a race against the calendar. There are mountains to ride, rivers to swim, trails to explore, horses to camp with, lakes to visit, huckleberries to pick, and approximately 47 places you swore you were going to see this summer but somehow haven’t made it to yet.

You’re trying to squeeze in one more camping trip, one more long ride, one more night around the campfire, one more adventure before the days get shorter and the roads get covered in snow. And somehow you’re also supposed to work a full-time job, maintain a household, run errands, and occasionally remember that you’re a human being who needs to rest. 🤠

Then September rolls around and you realize you’ve got about three nice weekends left, your horse camping bucket list is still a mile long, and suddenly every 10-day weather forecast has you acting like a meteorologist with a personal vendetta against winter.

Because living in Montana means spending half the year dreaming about summer and the other half trying to do absolutely EVERYTHING before the snow flies.

Anyway, if you need me, I’ll be outside making questionable scheduling decisions and pretending October isn’t happening while I still can. 😂🍂 And after that I’ll be snuggling with a cat, reading a book or painting until the sun comes back out next Spring.

This is your reminder that your horse doesn’t know they’re on a timeline. They don’t have one. So if you feel like you’re ‘behind’ or your horse isn’t as fancy broke, or perfectly behaved by a certain age—don’t beat yourself up. Enjoy the process and have patience. Just put in the time. Every horse is a little different.

*However I will caveat this one and say, this post is for training under saddle. Please instill basic ground manners and handling when they’re weanlings. That is a hard timeline because you’ll want to be able to at least handle them if they get hurt, and do basic care.

There are a few things that are completely different in endurance riding compared to trail riding/backcountry riding. Besides the obvious tack, one of the biggest things is letting your horse eat. If your horse is eating, they have food moving through their digestive tract. If food is moving through, all systems internally are functioning the way that they should and this is one of the ways we can check for good health. Vets listen to your horse for gut sounds, and you are graded on how loud your gut sounds are in all four quadrants. If your horse has poor gut sounds, they either are not consuming enough food, or your horse is working too hard. You can get pulled from the ride for having too quiet or non existent gut sounds.
One of the reasons I love endurance so much is that the horse’s health and wellness come first. You literally cannot continue, or even earn a completion if your horse isn’t fit to continue. That means that even if you ride the entire distance of the ride, but don’t pass the final vet check with your horse being deemed “fit to continue” you don’t earn a completion.
This teaches you so much about your horse and their fitness and just how much plays a role in how they perform: electrolytes, gut sounds, hydration, recovery, what type of hay you feed, what type of grain you feed, saddle fit, etc.
