30 years...

On this day in 1996 I was sitting in my doctors office in San Francisco with my brother. I wasn’t overly concerned and seriously, I just wanted to go home.

My doctor was overly concerned and calmly told me i had breast cancer and it was “a different, more invasive” kind. Lobular carcinoma for which the survival rate was pretty low. Since 1996, I’ve had 4 recurrences. Breast, brain, liver, breast. Twice my doctors told me to get my affairs in order because I wouldn’t survive this.

During my “you aren’t going to survive” years I freed some spies and some wrongfully convicted, surfed, danced my ass off, got tattoos, wrote a best seller, hung out at 22,000 feet on Mt. Everest, up-ended my San Francisco life for a small town in Oregon, gave up law, went back to being a chef and each May, I celebrate another year of life.

And so here I am. Sitting with my dog and thinking about every woman that walked this road before me. Many are gone but I will think about them today and celebrate each one…
