POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

10 years ago today, we published our very first book, "American Sons: The Untold Story of the Falcon and the Snowman" by Christopher Boyce, Cait Boyce, and Vince Font. At the time, Glass Spider Publishing didn't even exist, but "American Sons" would be the flagship publication that led to its creation. The book was the epitome of a maverick DIY project, and we leveraged the Amazon Kindle marketplace to make it available to readers worldwide. In the months leading up to publication, we built a website and began posting weekly blogs to generate media interest. Next came a Facebook page and the beginnings of a community of followers. Before the book was even finished, Christopher Boyce was interviewed on CNN, and many other outlets came calling. When the book was ready, we wrote a press release and distributed it globally. Then we hit publish and crossed our fingers. Within the first day, it ranked as the #1, #2, and #6 book in three different categories on Amazon—and in the last decade it has continued to rank within the top 100 books in those categories, having amassed close to 600 reader reviews and averaging a 4.4 out of 5-star rating. Taking all I'd learned from the experience, I created Glass Spider Publishing, where today we have published more than 110 books from authors as far away as Vietnam and Singapore. To celebrate this special 10-year anniversary, we'll be sharing a special announcement about the e-book tomorrow...so stay tuned!

It's the last day of March, and our commemoration of Women's History Month is drawing to a close. But no celebration of our women authors would be complete without mention of the one whose life story would influence the very inception of Glass Spider Publishing: Cait Mills Boyce. In 2013, I collaborated with Cait and her husband, Christopher Boyce (the infamous "Falcon" of The Falcon and the Snowman), to author the book American Sons: The Untold Story of the Falcon and the Snowman. It was an experience akin to a crash course in the publishing and self-publishing world, and one that led to everything I do today. But enough about me. In her life, Cait has taken on and beat more than many of us ever will, including cancer and the U.S. justice system. For more on that, you really should read American Sons, which can be found on our website (link in bio!) or everywhere books are sold online. And if you prefer audiobooks, that's also available! Thank you, Cait, for your strength and courage and friendship.

Five years ago today, I woke to the news that @davidbowie had died. It hit me like no other celebrity death before or since.

I was just days away from launching my book publishing service, and it suddenly became very important to me to give it a name that somehow paid tribute to a man whose music had, in recent years, become the soundtrack to my life.

It was my love for David Bowie and his song "This is Not America" that led me to see the movie "The Falcon and the Snowman" back in 1985. The true-life story behind the movie ignited a lifelong fascination that resulted in me co-writing and publishing a sequel 28 years later.

The experiences I gained in the writing, editing, and publication of "American Sons" were what led to my launching an indie publishing company—bringing me full circle to where I am and what I do today.

Life is one big interconnected circle, and in my circle, David Bowie played a big part. Could have been much worse. I could have been a massive Crash Test Dummies fan and called it Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Publishing. As it turned out, I called it Glass Spider Publishing. It's a good name.
