Introducing woman. warrior. writer. Catherine John

How did you come to author your life?

Writing is freedom. We break the chains of entrapment and mental slavery when we slay monsters with our pen. The poem was my first friend; a rhyming sonnet birthed in primary school. Some foolishness about cars and the fantasies of imagination. In grade four, our homework was to write a story. I pondered and created with great excitement a tale of people who turned into bananas and had adventures. My white American teacher said I cheated. How could a nine-year old Black girl come up with such a story? My writing life began with betrayal and a fight for ownership.

AFROINDIGENIZATION: A Theory of Grassroots Cultural Practice. Available Aug 25th through Amazon and @dukeuniversitypress.

Who are your Black or ancient African ancestors? Do you know? What did they give you that you don't know you have? What gifts? What hurts?

Do you know yourself?
Do you feel free?
Who controls your freedom?

What do you hope for in the dead of night or the early morning hours before you speak?

How much of who you are is that thing? by @caj_camara
