Introducing woman. warrior. writer. Catherine John How did you come to author your life? Writing is freedom. We break the chains of entrapment and mental slavery when we slay monsters with our pen. The poem was my first friend; a rhyming sonnet birthed in primary school. Some foolishness about cars and the fantasies of imagination. In grade four, our homework was to write a story. I pondered and created with great excitement a tale of people who turned into bananas and had adventures. My white American teacher said I cheated. How could a nine-year old Black girl come up with such a story? My writing life began with betrayal and a fight for ownership. Hello all! Excited to be part of the 1 million Black books challenge this summer, hosted by Crystal Forte ! My first book: an advanced digital copy of the new book by Catherine A. John-Camara (@caj_camara ), published by Duke University Press (@dukeuniversitypress), releasing on August 25! Thank you again Allison at DUP for sending me an advanced digital copy! Thoughts: Interesting to learn about how much spirituality plays a role in cultural change and identity for the African American community here as well as worldwide. Unique to learn how spirituality is part of certain practices in cultures worldwide. So powerful how hip-hop music gave weight to the reality of what was going on in the 80s-90s (regarding crack/drugs) Rashid Campbell’s life experience: powerful, complex, and will definitely be relatable for those who have experienced/witnessed anything like what he did. Overall: Such an insightful look at how a person’s childhood, level of education, and other life experiences help shape how they sees the world. Definitely recommend! All links to pre-order here: https://dukeupress.edu/afroindigenization My next book, soon: a re-read of The Vanishing Half, by @britrbennett (2020, hardcover)! @melanatedreader @1milblackbooks ——— Image Description: The cover of Catherine A. Hello all! My new article with Caribbean Life News (@caribbeanlifenews ), under Schneps Media (@schnepsmedia ) is out! Catherine A. John-Camara, professor and department chairwoman of Africana Studies at the University of Rhode Island (URI), will have her new book, “Afroindigenization: A Theory of Grassroots Cultural Practice,” published on August 25 by Duke University Press. According to John-Camara, the core topics of the book are culture, spirituality, and the African diaspora. It will specifically explore the power of Black Diaspora contributions, expressions, and cultural resilience, with the goal of answering this key question: “Where does the Indigenous power of enslaved Africans come from?” She grew up in the Caribbean country of Jamaica in the 1970’s and early 1980’s. Her mother was from Clarendon, Jamaica and her father was from St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the eastern Caribbean. Read the full story, and find the link to pre-order the book here: https://www.caribbeanlife.com/african-studies-book-catherine-john-camara/ (Note: as a new update on the website, you now have to set up an account, with email address and password, to read it fully.) @caj_camara @universityofri @dukeuniversitypress Thank you Allison at DUP for sending me an early copy, and the intro to Catherine! Alt text (on the site): The headline of the story is written in the color black, and it states: “African Studies professor to release new book next month.” My name is written underneath the headline in all capital and lowercase letters, in the color orange. It says: “Milette Millington.’ Date is under that, and it says July 20, 2026. Image Description: Catherine A.
