MARYANNE: A SOCIAL SYNTHESISER

CAKE expanded their work with us this year, taking on Southwark Park’s bandstand.

Named in tribute to pioneering composer Maryanne Amacher, the installation reimagines the Victorian bandstand as a place for rest, encounter and collective occupation. Oversized illuminated forms and foam-clad platforms for sitting, reclining and gathering - soft surfaces and diffuse light set against the bandstand’s ornate ironwork.

Drawing on the physical language of early electronic music - its analogue machines, cables and raw materiality - the installation became a social synthesiser.

057 Listening Room

Thrilled to share a first set of photos from a listening space we have helped to create for @spotifyuk realised in collaboration with pals @friendly.pressure and @_bourdeau.

A sequence of compression and release leads into a controlled listening chamber where space recedes and sound takes over. Warm tones, diffused light, and a raised dias frame this monumental, one of a kind sound system within a calibrated architectural niche. Backlit panels, reflective lacquered surfaces, and acoustically tuned walls work together to deliver clarity, depth, and controlled resonance. A curated set of furniture and lighting pieces enable an atmosphere of comfortable and engaged, communal listening.

Shout out to our amazing team and special mention to @emilianozavala and @will.barker for leading on a beautiful outcome.

Further collaborative efforts with the following roster of talent! @thein.creative on PM duties, for the monumental console @eddieolin, @ninetyoneninetytwo for their besutuful pendant lamp and @lessons.research for the gorgeous dining table.

Every ripple is a signature.

Bullion glass was once sold cheap for its flaws. A rippled pane, marked by the rod used to spin it. It ended up defining the look of London’s humbler shopfronts and alleyways.

In a world getting more automated by the day, that small signature of a craftsman has become something rare. Which is why we asked our friends at @londonglassblowing on Bermondsey Street, to make us two of their own.

Master glassblower Louis and assistant Sarah shape molten glass by hand, then press grooves in with glassblowing jacks. Glass never forgets. Look closely, and you’ll see every mark they made.

Huge thank you to the Architecture Foundation (@architecturefoundation) and the Zaha Hadid Foundation (@zahahadidfoundation) for hosting our talk as part of the Post Press series.

We asked what it takes to build cities where culture can thrive. Not just how to unlock vacant buildings, but how to create the systems, partnerships and institutions that make creative communities possible.

It was a privilege to host an incredible panel of Susanna Davies-Crook (@susanna_idc), Roland Fischer-Vousden (@rolandfischerv @setsetsetsetsetset ), Will Jennings (@willjennings80 @hyphastudios), Ali Wagner (@ali___wagner) and Roger Madelin (@britishlandplc). Thank you for sharing with us your knowledge, experience and insights.

We’re grateful for the chance to discuss the future of cultural production in London together and hope for many more to come.

You can catch up on the conversation via the AF Substack, transcript link in our bio.

047 WH Millennium Bridge

Delighted to share a first set of photos from our recently completed project with @watchhouse.

In this project we have tried to distill something of the Thames atmosphere and the experience of the embankment - informed by Claude Monet’s studies of light and monumental forms dissolving into mist over the river.

References include St Paul’s Cathedral in the ceiling void, Tate Modern in the industrial language, and Tower Bridge in the wider skyline. We worked with timber for warmth, brushed metals to catch and soften light, and concrete to reference the riverbed. The palette draws from water, stone and sky, shifting through the day.

We’re thrilled to be working with WatchHouse across a number of projects that will be emerging over the course of the next few weeks and months! Thanks to our amazing client, the wonderful team @cumberlandgroup for the main building works @mealdealworkshop for the joinery works and a very special mention to our own @patkadylag for leading this project in beautiful style.

Drawings and visuals from a recent project for the (IMO) coolest running brand @soar_running – this marks our first foray into the world of retail design – a small project working internationally with a US-based fabrication team was a fun challenge. With limited resource, we have tried to translate a refined, technical elegance from running clobber into built form. A layered approach, an expressive structure and a playful set of elements to display garments and running accessories.

More to share with some photos of the results in due course. 🛠️🌶️ by @cake.architecture
