Welcome to Wood Busters—where we bust the biggest old wives' tales in the wood industry. 🪵 Today’s episode: “John Bidwell planted walnut trees in California, and somehow that led to Claro Walnut and the commercial walnut industry?” FALSE!! ❌ Let’s look at the actual science and history: 1️⃣ Claro Walnut (Juglans hindsii) is a proud native California species. It long predated any settlers arriving here. 2️⃣ The commercial walnut market—which accounts for 99% of the total U.S. supply—comes from Juglans regia, commonly called English Walnut. The common names cause a lot of confusing misnomers online, but the real credit for the industry belongs to two true pioneers: Joseph Sexton and Felix Gillet. Sexton is credited with planting the first soft-shells back in 1867, and Gillet imported exceptional French varieties like the Franquette. Their real-world experiments with local climates and grafting techniques are what actually laid the foundation for the massive California orchards we see today. At Cali Hardwoods and Supplies, we don’t just love premium hardwood—we love the true history behind it. 👉 Drop a 🪵 in the comments if you want us to keep busting myths in the next episode! by @calihardwoods

Every piece of walnut carries unique contingencies—knots, fissures, grain distortions, and other records of its natural history. These are not imperfections to correct, but conditions from which geometry emerges. Contingency dictates geometry. — Helix & Hewn thanks Cali Hardwood for these wonderful specimens. https://www.calihardwoods.com/about www.helixandhewn.com www.artbias.org taken in Art Bias by @calihardwoods

SEMIFINAL 2: VOTING IS OPEN! 🌳🏆 One place remains in the final. Today, two completely different forms of woodworking compete for your vote. TAND STUDIO — BEN EDER - slides 2-6 Ben entered “After the Break,” a 7-inch calabash-style bowl turned from a highly figured Black Walnut crotch. Natural cracks and voids formed throughout the wood as the tree grew. Instead of hiding them, Ben filled each opening with brass using a kintsugi-inspired technique, making the imperfections part of the finished piece. The simple form keeps the focus on the contrast between the dark walnut, feathered figure, and bright brass repairs. VS. CEDAR CABIN CREATIONS — DANIELLE & SERGEI - slides 7-11 Danielle and Sergei entered a whimsical Claro Walnut entry table featuring a solid figured walnut top floating above its frame, Bastogne Walnut drawer fronts, and brass accents. Its flowing lines, contrasting woods, and carefully placed details give the table a distinct personality while allowing the natural figure of the walnut to remain the focus. HOW TO VOTE: Comment either “Tand Studio” or “Cedar Cabin Creations” below. • One vote per profile • Votes must be submitted on this original post • We’ll reply with a ✔️ to confirm your vote has been counted • Duplicate or edited votes will not count • Voting remains open for 24 hours from the time this post goes live Votes from the quarterfinals do not carry forward. This semifinal begins with both contestants at zero. Swipe through both projects, consider the creativity and craftsmanship behind each one, and cast your vote below. The winner advances to the final and continues competing for $500 in Cali Hardwoods store credit! Voting takes place only in the comments, and @calihardwoods is our only official account. by @calihardwoods
