As a reaction to numerous requests for feedback on projects, books, images, websites, etc., I decided to offer – aside from multiple-day photobook workshops and masterclasses – short mentoring sessions for photographers. These can be single sessions starting from 30 minutes lenght, or multiple sessions according to your needs.

What the mentoring session can be about: › you need a feedback to a specific project › you’re stuck while working on the project, and need a view from the outside to find out what direction to follow › you’re looking for the most suitable way to finish your project – an exhibition, installation, photobook, projection etc. › you’re working on a dummy and need feedback about your editing, sequencing and materials › you want to self-publish a book and have questions about how to produce it (printers, bookbinders, materials, techniques etc.)

I just published a new book! “Cannibals” (Long title: “We are vegan, four days a week. The other three we are cannibals”) is partly handmade, and coming from the same space of my previous books „Marble“ and „Kammer“.

✦ Finally: Photobook Workshop in Leipzig / 28 Nov –1 December

For any photographer, the recording of images is the first part of their journey with a story. The process that begins after the camera has been put down is often more challenging. The photographer is required to reflect, to speak and to write so that their work can have a full life.

We work closely with the participants on the production of a dummy from their own photo projects, focusing on the analysis of the project, editing, sequencing, design and the importance and choice of materials in the production of photobooks.

Photobook Workshop culminates with each participant creating a physical photobook dummy.

WINNER! u n b o u n d by Margaret Lansink (photography) & Rene van Hulst (poetry) took the 1st place at Fedrigoni Top Award yesterday night! And we were there to accept it in Paris.

This gem is the result of love for handmade photobooks and photography. Thank you Margaret and Rene for giving us the freedom to translate their works into the medium of photobook.

Photobook of the week: We are thrilled to share
“Poetics of Dwelling” by Susana Espana @sie.espana

This is amazing small book wonderfully designed by the photographer, designer and publisher Calin Kruse, @calinkruse (www.fluut.de).

The book is completely handmade mounted (Leporello) and binded. Paper used is Fedrigoni Arena Rough Ivory, which is acid free, elemental chlorine free and long life.
Collection of 29 colour images and Polaroids

Size 14.2 x18cm
Printed in Germany in an Edition of 50 copies

Susana Espana: “Photography has allowed me to explore the notion of #home - not merely as a physical space, but as a #santuary for dreams, a shelter that protects the dreamer and allows them to dream in peace. Through the intimacy of my #domesticspaces and my coexistence with my children, I reflect on how a person’s ability to return to themselves is, at the same time, a way of reclaiming the world.”

Bio
Susana Espana is a Spanish photographer, visual artist, and collector. Born in Spain (1975), she currently lives and works in Bremen, Germany.

Originally graduating in Dentistry, she later began studying Art Restoration before ultimately pursuing Photography. With a master’s degree in fine art photography from the London College of Communication (London, 2007), she has participated in group exhibitions across Europe, the UK, and Turkey. Her first solo exhibition in the United States took place in 2024 at Atelier Laforest, Robert Munford Archive (Maine, USA).

Photobook Workshop with Calin Kruse, Yana Kruse (dienacht Publishing) & Patricia Morosan

This 6-day workshop aims to expand your vision by exploring the possibilities of your visual practice through the most intimate medium - the photobook. We will approach the photobook and the artist book as an intensive theoretical - practical reflection. We will review all the key aspects of a book production, from research and image-making to editing, design, materiality, sensation, printing, and financing. By the end of the week - each participant will have created a photobook dummy.

The workshop ends with each participant creating a photobook dummy.

This masterclass is about the creation of photobooks on the one hand, as well as about rethinking the project in the context of a photobook as a specific medium, on the other hand. PROGRAM

Werkstatt Berlin offers an educational program in documentary photography, exploring conceptual, experimental and straight approaches to the genre. Seminars are one weekend each month. Saturdays are dedicated to the development of individual projects and Sundays are invited guest lecturers who present their work as a source of inspiration. The aim is for participants to produce a solid photographic or filmic project to be part of a group exhibition in Berlin, and to make a book dummy under the guidance of publisher, Calin Kruse of @dienachtpublishing. Teachers of the program are Michael Grieve, Patricia Morosan and Calin Kruse.

The Werkstatt Berlin 2025 program begins in March and applications are open. Limited to 12 places.

Portfolio review offers an opportunity to present, question and get professional feedback on your body of work, be it a completed photo series, an ongoing documentary project, a body of work photographed over a certain period of time, (seemingly) miscellaneous photographs that you struggle to put together in whatever format (portfolio, book, exhibition, etc) you want.
Depending on your work and goals, you might consider having a portfolio review if:
– you need feedback on a specific photo project;
– you feel stuck in your project and need an outside look to find out what direction to take;
– you need advice on how to finish your project – an exhibition, installation, photobook, etc.;
– you have very different photo series and need advice on how to select and/or organize them in one portfolio.
This group portfolio review format offered by Calin Kruse, founder, editor and designer of dienacht Publishing combines individual review and group discussion, which allows participants not only to get individual professional feedback on their work but also to benefit from discovering and discussing other works, and a variety of mentors’ approaches to them.
Each participant will have a 30-minute session with Calin, devoted solely to the discussion of their work. Other participants will be able to fully follow and benefit from the discussion of other projects. Participants are also welcome to engage in a group discussion to contribute to the review process.
