It may have taken a couple years, but I’m thrilled to share that my second children’s book, When Roots Grow Deep, is officially in the works! 🎉📚 Creating stories that inspire little hearts has been such a joy and gift, and I’m SO grateful for the incredible encouragement I’ve received along the way.

A special thank you to the WONDERFUL Vaneetha Risner, @vaneetharisner for graciously endorsing my book. What a gift I don’t take lightly! 🤍✨As well as the kind president at ECPA, Jeff Crosby. Your support and kind words mean the world to me and reaffirm why I love telling stories that help children grow in God’s truth.✨This book specifically focuses on the fruits of the Spirit and God’s love. Hi, sweet community! Welcome, to @callapresspub, if you’re new here!👋🏼 🍂

My name is Samantha Cabrera, and it’s dawned on me that I actually haven’t shared the specific background of how Calla Press Publishing began on this space. So, if you’re a reader, I hope you enjoy hearing about how it all started.

Stories have always fascinated me. My earliest impactful reading memory was in the 8th grade—it was a story about a young girl surviving the Holocaust. I remember thinking how incredible it was that she was able to tell her story. After that, I read about two to three books per week, and if you didn’t find me reading, then something was definitely going on. When asked what I wanted to do when I graduated, I said I wanted to be a writer and publish books.

In the 9th grade, I wrote a letter to my Nana saying that I dreamed of being a writer and starting a Christian book publishing house (see one of the carousel photos)! At a young age, I felt a deep gravitational pull toward Christian books and how God could work through them to reach the lost, hurting, and broken. (Cont. in 🎠)

Hopping on this audio, because there is absolutely no way I’d imagine what God had in store for that mama who thought it was the end.

And let me tell you this, if you come from a nightmare of trauma—and nothing prepared you to how to mother well—that’s where Jesus came and filled my cracks and helped me become the mama I was called to be. My husband was my greatest earthly encourager. About Joel: ✏️ 🎨

Joel Santana is an illustrator and painter who finds stories in the small, easy-to-miss moments of everyday life. Some of his work is whimsical, some is symbolic, and some comes straight from things he’s noticed around him. All of it is a genuine extension of his heart and how he sees the world. In nearly two decades as an illustrator, Joel has created art for clients including Disney, gaming studios, Penguin Random House, and has illustrated several children’s books. He also teaches digital illustration online to students around the world. As a creator made in God’s image, he sees his work as an expression of his faith. Joel lives in Tampa, FL, with his wife, their two teenagers, and their Schnauzer, Draper.

About his book, “Christopher and the Waiting Miracle”: 💡

When Christopher’s beloved pet sparrow disappears, he prays for his friend to come home. He waits and waits, but nothing seems to change. Slowly, Christopher’s prayer begins to change too. Through Christopher’s journey, children discover that God hears our prayers even when the answer takes time. They also learn that praying for the good and safety of someone we love, even when we cannot have what we want, is a beautiful way of trusting God.

Vanessa Pate holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and has spent several years working with early elementary students in the classroom. As the wife of a minister, she has spent years investing in children, youth, college students, and young adults through church and ministry settings. She is also the mother of two young daughters whose distinct personalities inspired the message behind her book, Different on Purpose. Vanessa is passionate about helping others recognize their God-given worth and purpose and celebrate the beauty of God’s intentional design in every person.

Abigail Rainey is an interdisciplinary artist and art educator based in Denton, Texas. She earned a B.F.A. in Art Education in 2020 and an M.F.A. in Visual Arts from Texas Woman’s University in 2025, and her work has been exhibited nationally at venues including Dallas Contemporary, 500X Gallery, and the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center.

Abi currently teaches as an Adjunct Professor at Texas Woman’s University and North Central Texas College, where she enjoys teaching foundations.

Raised as a farm girl and beekeeper, she has a deep love for agricultural roots, rich fellowship, and the beauty of God’s creation—themes that often appear in her writing. She dreams of cultivating a whimsical balance between motherhood, medicine, writing, farming, and exploring God’s handiwork—and of sharing those joys, one story at a time. Her work has been published in several Christian publications including The Gospel Coalition @thegospelcoalition and Core Christianity.

Grace Garrett is a Northern California based artist. Grace finds inspiration in the ordinary wonders of daily life. Whether she is traveling abroad, spending days in her little farm town, or just watching her three daughters play, she finds delight in the every day. I am a mama of three, 6, 4, and almost 2. I think some may not understand my angle, but it should not be this hard, but in today’s society, it has not surprised me. It honestly grieves me. My husband and I have talked about this a lot, especially because he went through so much with me in the beginning of our 10-year marriage.

Mental illness deserves gentle compassion. Of course it does. It deserves treatment, support, and an avalanche of love—to be talked about—but compassion cannot mean abandoning accountability. That is a slippery slope I’m not willing to walk on. We can have biblical compassion for the person and the issue while still naming a crime a crime—and protecting others from it.
