Plant Parenthood starring California natives…thriving and un-aliving.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I reunited with my gibbon friend Maggie for the first time in 25 years. The local market in Great Bend made these adorable cupcakes from photos, in honor of Maggie and Manny and all their dedicated caregivers at the Brit Spaugh Zoo. Adorbs!! #gibbon #greatbendkansas #primatesofinstagram #animalbond #gibbonexperience taken in Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo by @calnativeplantpile

KITTEN TEETH

Our stray kitten is growing up so fast that his baby teeth fell out on my arm. Bert has racked up massive vet bills for chronic intestinal/stomach inflammation. He has a GoFundMe link in my bio if you would like to help us help him. Thank you so much!

AI RUINING MY LIFE
Is the California native plant garden truly safe from AI, or will it F with me there too? Who’s feeling like AI wants to destroy us all and take our jobs? I love how they blame immigrants for this. Gibbon Reunion I had a beautiful reunion with my long, lost love in Great Bend, Kansas this summer. Getting to see this wonderful gibbon again after 25 years was the highlight of my year. If you’re ever in the area, Brit Spaugh Zoo is a wonderful, free place with a fantastic team of caregivers. I know she and her roommate are loved by them, and by the locals who come and see them. #gibbon #primatesofinstagram #animalbond #greatbendkansas #gibbonexperience taken in Great Bend, Kansas by @calnativeplantpile

Bert’s Diarrhea Journey: Intestines on fire
They took my audio away!! :(
UPDATE: The EPI test that we'd hoped would be positive (it's not a tough fix) came back negative. This is a huge bummer, because the next option is an intestinal biopsy, OR a less accurate (but less invasive) needle aspirate. It seems the 3 contenders are 1) FIP - which his bloodwork is not indicating...plus he's tested negative on 2 different tests...but often yields false negatives; 2) Inflammatory bowel, rare in kittens, or 3) lymphoma, also rare in kittens. He's currently on Tylan, and the vet is now suggesting a hail Mary longer dose of metronidazole (he's taken it twice). She also said to see if the current hydrolyzed protein food starts to work, which takes time, and to stick with the Visbiome probiotics. We're adding Pro-pectalin and sub Q fluids. So this is a massive gig. If by early October he's not improved, she suggests the biopsy, which is pricey and carries some risk.

Has anyone been through this?

Bert has a GoFundMe in my bio for all of his expenses if anyone wants to help us with this stray who showed up on his own terms. Thank you so much for following the soggy saga!

It’s not great news, folks. We’re still waiting for more test results for the stray kitten who showed up a couple months ago, but we now know this isn’t an easy fix. Bert has a link in my bio for his medical care for anyone who’d like to help out. Thank you for caring about Bert, and all cats. #straykitten #kittenrescue #kittenrescuela #tuxedokitten #streetkitty taken in Los Angeles, California by @calnativeplantpile

When you love California native plants and try to learn more about them, do you sometimes feel like a cat who peed on the couch? Like you’re being scolded for a mistake even though you have a bladder infection and can’t help it?

Not always, but every so often the native plant scene can feel like an elite club with public hazing. Maybe I’m just on my period, or I forgot to take my meds today. Who knows.

Anyways, this is a safe place to comment. We’ll only mock you behind your back. #droughttolerantplants #californianativeplant #pollinatorgarden #nativeplants #socalgarden taken in Los Angeles, California by @calnativeplantpile

SUMMER BLOOMERS!
At least someone’s happy in this heat. I think it’s weird, but I’m like, “You do you.” Drought tolerant for reals, with a creepy smile. I know there is a beauty to the summer look of the California native plant garden, but I’m not feeling it. So, glad to have these guys represent.#droughttolerantplants #californianativeplant #pollinatorgarden #nativeplants #socalgardening @gretaleeunofficially taken in Los Angeles, California by @calnativeplantpile

STRAY KITTEN UPDATE Update on our stray kitten who’s had nonstop diarrhea since he showed up 6 weeks ago, screaming. He’s now been neutered and still purrs as much as he mud-butts. He may need an ultrasound bc we’ve done all the tests/meds/food. If you are so moved, there is a link in my bio to help support his care. He showed up, and though not prepared, there was no way we were turning and locking the door. Thank you so much to everyone who has followed his journey and donated. It means so much to us!! #straykitten #tuxedokitten #kittenrescue #sickkitten #streetkitty taken in Los Angeles, California by @calnativeplantpile

Bromeliads
NOT NATIVE TO CALIFORNIA. Calm down - I’m aware. Even though it’s from the rain forest, it just needs water in its cone hole; SO IT’S NOT HOGGING WATER like your mom at the bar who demands a firehose be turned on her so she can have a wet T-shirt contest of one. They live from Mexico down - and yes, they can drink the water without diarrhea. #bromeliad #tropicalplant #pottedplant #droughttolerantplants #bromeliadsofinstagram taken in Los Angeles, California by @calnativeplantpile

Bliss’ Buckwheat
Buckwheats just wanna have fun, and this gal is proof. Eriogonum Blissianum is the result of a tawdry, after-hours hook up at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Who knew the California native plant garden was like Spring Break, Daytona Beach. Geesh. #californianativeplant #droughttolerantplants #pollinatorgarden #nativeplants #socalgarden taken in Los Angeles, California by @calnativeplantpile

Weeds in the garden

I’m so over it, and you should be too. Pulling weeds is not therapeutic, it’s a pain in the hole. My California native plant garden deserves better, and so do we. Then there’s that issue of wondering, “Is it a wildflower sprout from that seed packet I scattered 2 years ago, or a weed?” The guilt if I inadvertently terminated a tidy tip! Then I’ve deprived pollinators of food and it’s all my fault. No wonder I sleep like crap. #californianativeplant #droughttolerantplants #pollinatorgarden #nativeplants #gardenweeds by @calnativeplantpile
