Cal Poly Physics Professor Louise Edwards will give a talk on Thursday to discuss the exciting ways in which researchers are using the new Vera C. Rubin Observatory.

The state-of-the-art facility on a mountaintop in Chile is capturing the cosmos in extraordinary detail, compiling a 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time.

Edwards, an expert in astronomy, currently is working in conjunction with the National Science Foundation in Washington D.C.

And she is conducting research with Cal Poly students to assess data and images captured by the world’s largest digital camera!

The event, to be held Thursday, July 16, at 7 p.m. at 1515 Fredericks St. in San Luis Obispo, will be projected from a livestream as Dr. Edwards speaks remotely to the SLO audience.

Using years of data from an ocean time series supported by @sccoos_org (Southern California Coastal Observing System) and the Central & Northern California Ocean Observing System, Bailey College undergraduate students collaborated with Dr. Alexis Pasulka (Biological Sciences Department) and Dr. Ryan Walter (Physics Department) to explore the dynamics of Akashiwo sanguinea in SLO Bay along the California Central Coast.

Akashiwo sanguinea is a marine dinoflagellate that can form harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal waters, where it can negatively affect a variety of marine organisms.

They recently published a peer-reviewed article on their findings. Read more about what the study discovered in the link in our bio!

For the first time, Cal Poly hosted the Testing Expertise and Access to Marine Energy Research Program (TEAMER) Facility Summit this week (June 16-17)!

Visitors attended the summit from national laboratories, universities, private companies and nonprofits to discuss a host of topics, including ongoing programs, the TEAMER application process, effective strategies for collaboration and the future of the program.

As of 2025, the Cal Poly Pier facility has been designated by the U.S. Department of Energy as an open-water test site for industry evaluations of marine energy devices and systems.

As part of TEAMER, the Cal Poly Pier offers collaborators open-water access from its kilometer-long marine research station in San Luis Obispo Bay in Avila Beach, California — among the first fixed-platform, open ocean sites in the program.

Big news! Cal Poly has introduced a new course that will cover the fundamentals of building synthetic cells while collaborating on innovative projects.

Engineering Synthetic Cells is taught by Dr. Javin Oza, a @calpoly biochemistry associate professor. The class, which launched in the spring quarter, combines instructional learning experiences and research, employing lab modules and manuals as students plan and conduct experiments and share information with scientific community members worldwide.

The Learn by Doing experience includes collaboration with research partners, including: b.Next, a San Francisco-based applied research company that developed and maintains Nucleus, an open-source platform for building synthetic cells; @promega_corporation; and @schmidtsciences, a philanthropic organization founded by Eric Schmidt and Wendy Schmidt!

Congrats to Dr. Nishanta “Nishi” Rajakaruna, a Cal Poly biological sciences professor, for winning the national 2026 Charles Edwin Bessey Teaching Award bestowed by the Botanical Society of America!

The prestigious award recognizes individuals whose “work has improved the quality of botanical education at a regional, national, or international level.” Dr. Rajakaruna has served in faculty positions at three institutions: the College of the Atlantic (2004–2008; 2010–2016), San José State University (2008–2010), and California Polytechnic State University (2017–present).

“Of all the recognitions I have received throughout my career, this one is especially meaningful because it stems from nominations and support from students I have had the privilege of teaching and mentoring over the past 22 years,” Rajakaruna said. “Teaching has always been my first love. It always has been and always will be. There is no greater reward than knowing that you may have made a positive difference in the lives of your students, and to be recognized by former students in this way means more to me than I can adequately express.”

The 2026 BEACoN Symposium held Wednesday at the Multi-Activity Center (MAC) was a big success!🎉📚💚

Great job by student researchers speaking about their BEACoN experience and presenting their research!

BEACoN Stands for Believe, Educate & Empower, Advocate, Collaborate, Nurture and is a program run by Culture and Institutional Excellence (CIX). Centering underrepresented students, but open to all undergraduates, BEACoN seeks to make research accessible, providing students with funded research opportunities working with faculty mentors.

Cal Poly public health major Rebeka Moges is the Bailey College Great Grad of 2026!

Learn more about her journey (story link in our bio) dealing with attention-deficit disorder; losing her mother at a young age; and her goal to help address heath disparities.

The Santa Monica resident will likely graduate in the top quarter of the Class of 2026 and plans to pursue a career in public health, with a particular interest in maternal and child health.

“I hope to contribute to improving health equity and expanding access to care for underserved communities," Moges said.

A little update on Field Quarter!

Students have been spending time in the Mojave Desert and Sonoran Desert. They have been looking for snakes and lizards with Dr. Emily Taylor on the Kelso Dunes, hiking and learning about desert plant ecology in Joshua Tree National Park, and spotting Bighorn Sheep in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Biology faculty Clint Francis, Matt Ritter and Jenn Yost also are leading the ecological instruction as part of the environmental learning experience.

Rowan Campbell, a third-year environmental management and protection major, with a concentration in wildlife biology, shared, "I grew up in California, but Field Quarter has made me realize how little I really knew about the state I call my home."

Field Quarter continues to give students hands-on experiences that deepen their understanding of California’s diverse ecosystems while building connections with classmates, faculty, and the landscapes around them.
