‘Zwodder’ ceramics & sterling silver, 2026

Currently exhibited at @quenchgallery as part of ‘Where’s my mind?’ 🧠

‘Zwodder’ explores the moment of breaking dormancy. A network resembling underground root systems of swollen, moulded forms. Sprouting tubers extending outward, their shoots nervously emerge searching for a light source they cannot locate. The surfaces appear aged, bruised and slightly decayed, suggesting cycles of growth, rot and regeneration. At its core, the work uses vegetable mutation as a metaphor for queerness and forms of existence that sit outside perceived biological or social “norms.”

The work takes its name from the dialect term zwodder, a word once used in Somerset to describe a dull, drowsy or stupefied state of mind. The term has roots in Old English and survives as part of the fading linguistic history of the West Country.

The piece draws on references from Sylvia Plath’s poem Wintering, particularly its themes of domesticity, endurance and rebirth. The work is made from stoneware ceramics with sterling silver details. by @caluwez

Pickleback #1 ✨

Thanks to @piccalilli.gallery for having me 🦷

In their first ever performance, De Caluwé expands their sculptural practice into the realms of sound, mechanism, and movement. Presenting as an orchestral figure, they adopt the posture and formal dress of a cellist while activating an apparatus of chattering wind-up toys. Mounted upon this instrument, stalks of grass judder in rhythmic formation. This process transforms the natural into the mechanical, while conversely conducting man-made objects in a beastly symphony—bringing to mind the amorous chorus of frogs performing their mating rituals. The performance invites the audience to observe the frenetic movements of the mechanised grasses, and ponder their melody.

This Wednesday 10 June, 6–10pm.
Introducing the first group of artists taking part in Pickleback: Zoe De Caluwé, Nishi Chodimella, Sky Dair, Maddalena Iodice and Fi Isidore.

Pickleback is a new programme of experimental performances and works-in-progress that actively supports process, experimentation and risk-taking. Conceived as a space for testing, sharing and collective reflection, it invites artists to present material in development and audiences to engage with ideas as they unfold.
This inaugural edition brings together works exploring themes of performativity, pop culture and play.

The evening will run from 6–10pm, with performances taking place between 7–9pm. Short breaks will take place throughout the programme, and audiences are welcome to arrive, leave and re-enter throughout the evening. Following the performances, there will be time to share thoughts, feedback and informal conversation over drinks.

We’re delighted to announce that @recklesspickle are sponsoring the evening. Alongside beers, they’ll be serving a selection of pickle brines paired with whiskey shots, a pickleback.
Taking its name from the drink, the programme embraces unlikely pairings, unexpected encounters and productive frictions, creating space for ideas, practices and people to meet in new ways.
The bar will operate on a donation basis, with all proceeds supporting the continued development of the programme and the artists taking part.

RSVP is not essential. However tickets are available on a pay-what-you-can basis to support the programme with free tickets available to ensure the event remains accessible to all (link in bio linktree).

Æfenmete (eh-ven-meh-teh), Old English for ‘evening meal’ is a celebratory 10th-century banquet reimagined in the Foyle Rooms at Turner Contemporary.

Taking place on 17 and 18 April 2026, this immersive eight-course feast explores the historical ‘hungry gap’—the lean weeks before the spring harvest, when winter stores ran low and communities relied on foraging, hunting, fishing and preserving food from the surrounding landscape.

Drawing on early medieval recipes, historical chronicles and archaeological evidence, Æfenmete brings these flavours to life. Expect riddles, monastic herbs, medieval spice blends, wild vegetables, local shellfish, meads and ales, all inspired by the woodlands, marshes and shoreline of the Kent coast.
Guests will dine as the Margate sunset falls across the sea, creating a unique blend of history, storytelling and seasonal dining.
