From Wednesday to Friday, tens of thousands of campus workers went on strike. 🪧 As they face outsourcing, declining wages, and rising costs of living, YDSA was proud to support the workers that make our UC run. 🛠️🌟

Some victories from our strike support campaign:
🍊 150+ grocery bags prepared and distributed for striking workers.
🪴 Collaborated with @asucsenatorchander to ensure the ASUC Senate was not holding meetings on campus during strikes. $1,500+ secured for campus worker support.
☕️ Set up a support tent on the picket lines with @peetslaborunion so student supporters could learn how to get involved in supporting our campus workers.
🥘 Prepared Nam Wan and egg rolls for striking workers!
🗯️ Held two forums during the strike, on where UC is invested in and a campus worker town hall.
📨 Passed out 1,000+ flyers to students entering dining halls to build awareness about the strike.

Happy holidays, everyone!!

YDSA just finished wrapping presents for our campus workers.

We've learned that many workers spend over half their paychecks on gifts over the Holiday season. Everyone should be able to afford gifts for their families without struggling, especially the workers who keep this university running.

Building off of connections we made with the campus workforce during AFSCME 3299's past six strikes, we collected gift requests from workers and raised money from the student body to buy them.

If the university isn't going to pay UC workers what they deserve, then we are ready to show that we have their backs and will support them in their fight for dignity and respect.

your student-run nonprofit grocery co-op is gonna be in the 🗞️ paper so much, you’re gonna get tired of us being in the paper 📰

the @dailycal covered our support, alongside @calydsa, for the boycott called by @sbworkersunited!

our tiny, mighty member-governed grocery co-op has been building these relationships for years. since 2022, our members have met with local Starbucks worker-organizers to learn what collective change in the food system actually looks like. we’ve shared meals with founding union leaders, including @JazBrisack, and collaborated with @PeetsLaborUnion and @VerveWorkersUnited.

because food justice happens in our neighborhood. in the coffee shop down the street. in food workers organizing together for dignity and a say in the conditions of their work...and in whether the rest of us show up for them.

in our own Collective, we get to practice self-determination through our cooperative structure. that comes with a responsibility to support people fighting for it across the food system.

@StarbucksWorkersUnited has called for a boycott of Starbucks to support their workers. our tiny, mighty member-governed grocery co-op has been preparing for this moment for years. our members have met with worker leaders at local Starbucks to talk about their union campaigns — and how their work *actually* looks in practice...going back all the way to 2022. they've even hosted intimate meals with the union's founding leadership, including @JazBrisack — to say nothing of our collaborations with the @PeetsLaborUnion and @VerveWorkersUnited.

the tl;dr ? brave workers are fighting collective food justice struggles...in our neighborhood. in our local coffee shops. and in order to win the basic dignity they — and all food systems workers — deserve...they need support from their community.

the Collective is lucky to enjoy self-determination as a student organization through our cooperative structure...it's incumbent upon us to support nearby struggles to secure the similar rights for people all across the food system.

Cal students, we need your help.

On Tuesday, September 15th at 6pm, the Berkeley City Council will vote on whether to lift the ban on chemical weapons, including tear gas, smoke, and pepper spray. If passed, police will have sole discretion over when these weapons are used in our community.

Show up to the City Council meeting on Tuesday, September 15th, to make your stance heard. Your voice matters.
