#zanzibardreaming it seems only right that I share these images to a Queen song. Freddy Mercury was born here, and I’m stoked to be back for a few weeks. @kate.mcleay arrived in time to celebrate my birthday. Life’s so good.

The Kusi is supposed to be spent by now, but the legendary south west trades are still blowing and I’m Wingfoiling almost every day….and sharing the waters only with the ngalamas (traditional sailing boats) and a handful of local kitesurfers.

One of the greatest things about a safari in Uganda is that you never know what you will see…either on the side of the road or in the bush #wildguide #exploreuganda #mountainsofthemoon #ugandasafari #gowild by @cam_mcleay

There’s nothing quite like experiencing Kidepo with a local guide. Their knowledge of the landscape, wildlife and the subtle signs of the bush can transform a safari.

Often described as one of the most spectacular game parks on the African continent, Kidepo is also renowned for its huge herds of Cape buffalo and is home to more than 500 species of birds. Quite simply, it’s my favourite.

The Abyssinian Roller, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Grey Heron, Woolly-necked Stork, Grey-headed Fiscal, Secretary Bird, Griffon Vultures and Grey-crowned cranes (our National bird in Uganda) shown here are just a few of them.

Kidepo is wild, remote and wonderfully diverse — and there’s always something more to discover.

This is what wild Uganda sounds like….imagine joining me here?

The thunder of buffalo hooves across open savannah. The low rumble of elephants. A lioness roaring in the background. The distant call of a shoebill rising from the papyrus wetlands.

“The whole continent is a profusion of life, and colour and beauty.” — Winston Churchill

Few places bring those words to life quite like Uganda.

From the sweeping savannahs of Murchison Falls and Kidepo to the misty forests of Bwindi and the winding waterways of the Nile, Uganda is alive with extraordinary wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. Watch elephants gather at the water’s edge, giraffes stride across the plains, hippos surface in the river, chimpanzees call from the forest canopy, and rare shoebills stand motionless in the wetlands.

A Ugandan safari is more than seeing wildlife. It is feeling the earth tremble beneath thousands of hooves, breathing in the warm scent of wild grass after rain, and becoming part of a landscape that feels both timeless and completely alive.

I’m leading a handful of friends on safari in Uganda next year. Share your e-mail address with me if you’d be keen to come? 🇺🇬

At our bedroom door this morning, our neighbours just showed up unannounced. They didn’t knock or introduce themselves, but just stared into our bedroom.

I guess they had moved into the neighborhood long before we had.

Over two decades ago, I was becoming increasingly dismayed by the illegal felling of the ancient hardwood trees on the islands in the middle of the Nile.

I started wondering whether there was a better way? What if we bought the islands, invested in a lodge, protected the forest and created long-term employment for members of the local community? Rather than earning a one-off payment for cutting down a tree, they could earn several times that amount every month through meaningful employment.

The model of employing local villagers in an area where there was virtually no employment before had worked really well for the rafting industry we established in on the Victoria Nile in 1996.

Soon after I bought what became Wildwaters Island, a young fisherman called Juma, who spoke no English, offered to show me around.

Here he is today — more than 20 years later.

My legendary brother Chest @isopressnz did an exceptional job running the construction of Wildwaters Lodge and one of Juma’s most memorable jobs was carving bespoke hand basins for every room.

We found chunks of beautiful pink granite scattered around the island, and Juma turned them into the most extraordinary basins. Each one took him about a month to shape into a hand basin!

What an incredible feeling to return to Wildwaters Lodge and be welcomed by some of the very special people who were part of the team when we opened the lodge more than 16 years ago. Juma, Vincent, Azidah, and Stella….you legends. We are so proud of you all. Amazing life journeys making the most of your opportunities.

So much has changed, but the warmth, friendship and memories remain. Seeing familiar faces again made this visit truly unforgettable. ❤️🌿

Sailing is a beautiful thing but even more so when you are on a traditional Zanzibari dhow. Thank you so much Helen and her great crew for hosting us for a day trip to Pangume island.

The last time I sailed was with Bob and @brucemaunsell across the Pacific from the Marquesas to Tonga last year. That was extra special and Mimi gave us a similar feel, a gentle roll and a special ride #mimithedhow #zanzibar #gosailing #freedom #iamsailing taken in Zanzibar, Tanzania by @cam_mcleay

At first light a Zanzibari women dumps her heavy load of seaweed on the beach. Metres away, European women on holiday walk by in g-strings and bikini tops, a stark contrast of cultures.

Check out the men sailing their ngalawas across the lagoon at high tide. In the second clip it’s blowing about 17 knots and it takes two men standing on the upwind outrigger to keep the boat in trim.

The traditional ngalawa has been sailing the waters of Zanzibar for centuries. Originally developed through the exchange of seafaring knowledge across the Indian Ocean, these elegant outrigger canoes have long been used by local fishermen for their speed, stability, and ability to handle coastal swells.

Built by skilled craftsmen, a ngalawa is traditionally carved from a single mango log with outriggers made from mangrove poles and lashed together using natural fibre or rope. Today, they remain an enduring symbol of Zanzibar’s rich maritime heritage.
