♥️ What a joy it was to see our old friend Johnson Sanyu Iheramithi from the Ugandan side of the mighty Rwenzori Mountains.

Johnson is a Bakonzo, one of the hardy mountain people who have been traversing and living among these mountains for generations.

Cam first met Johnson during one of his many mountain forays into the Rwenzori. On one of those adventures, our then 12 year old Arch joined the expedition. Back then Arch and Johnson were the same height and they connected instantly. They got on like a house on fire, and a deep bond was formed.

About a year before we left Uganda Johnson shared with Cam his dream of earning more money so that he could take a wife. Long story short, Cam seemed to think that was an excellent idea and Johnson came to work with us at our lodge, Wildwaters. My endearing memory of Johnson? Ever keen. Ever smiling. So easy to love. Missing the mountains.

Once he had saved some money Johnson returned home to the mountains. We hadn’t seen him since and, over the years, had lost touch.

So when he walked into the room again, carrying that beautiful heart and his ever ready smile, I was SO HAPPY. And then came even more joy as he introduced us to his beautiful boys: Mumbere Joseph, now 13, and Bwambaye Chris, who is 8. What wonderful young men they are.

Johnson took us home to meet his mother, who is in her 90s, and his sisters. We were completely blown away by the warmth, generosity and love of his community. The welcome we received was truly beautiful.

Johnson is still mountain guiding but has also started an adult education hub under a simple tarp outside his home. He shared that only around 5% of adults in Bakonzo are literate, and he is determined to do his part to change that.

A man with a big heart, a strong spirit and a vision for his people. It was such a privilege to reconnect with Johnson and witness the incredible work he is doing in his mountain home. We will be back! Next time with books! Who wants to come with me? ♥️

Margherita Peak⛰️🇺🇬

A 2am wake-up and 3:30am start to reach the summit of Mt Stanley’s Margherita Peak (5,109m) - the highest point in Uganda and the third-highest mountain in Africa.

Ropes, ascenders, glacier crossings, freezing winds, and thin air made for an unforgettable climb. After 9.5 hours to the summit and back, we still had another 2-hour hike to reach camp for the night.

Perfect weather, a great team, and even better company made the challenge worthwhile. Grateful for the opportunity to stand on top of Uganda.

It been another uniquely perfect recipe for an unforgettable safari.

A couple of divine nephews, a few fabulous friends, abundant wildlife, wonderful hospitality and generous doses of safari magic along the way.

We’ve now left the likely lads to conquer the formidable Rwenzori Mountains … and are waiting with bated breath to hear their stories.

Uganda, we love you. ❤️

Stay tuned… the gap year adventures continue.

Thankyou for following our adventures. We are loving them and we are loving you!

Love Kate and my main man Cam @cam_mcleay

A little announcement from Aaron and me… ✨

While I was in Bali, something unexpected unfolded… we purchased Kate & Cam McLeay’s crystal business. 💎

At first I thought, do I really need another thing? 😄 But the truth is, crystals have been part of our world for such a long time.
I’ve been collecting them since I was a teenager, drawn to their beauty, energy, and the way each one seems to hold their own presence and story.

Aaron and I have always shared a love for crystals, and now we’ve been unpacking these beautiful high-vibe treasures together… and honestly, it feels a bit like Christmas over here. ✨📦💫

We’re surrounded by the most incredible, high-quality crystals, and the prices are beautifully reasonable too. I already know this is going to be a learning journey for me… especially because I seem to fall in love with every crystal I unwrap and instantly want to keep it 😄

This stunning smoky quartz is one of the first we’ve unpacked and wow… the grounding, protective energy is so beautiful 🤎
It has SOLD!

We’re planning to bring crystals along to the Hawke’s Bay Yoga Festival and other beautiful events coming up, and I’ll also be adding some to my shop once everything is ready.

In the meantime, I’ll start sharing a few pieces here on Instagram as we unpack them. If something catches your eye, or you’re looking for a particular crystal, feel free to message me anytime 💛

Feeling really grateful and excited to share this new chapter with you.

❤️ What a perfect way to begin our safari adventure in our heartland of Uganda … and what a beautiful group to journey with.

Over our decade living in Uganda … and in the many visits since … we’ve lost count of the friends and family who have joined us for safari magic. But this trip feels extra special.

Seventeen years ago, the Moore family came to stay with us for a month-long Ugandan adventure filled with unforgettable memories. Now they’ve returned to celebrate a 60th birthday … and a surprise engagement 💍✨ We couldn’t be happier for them. And for us too. How lucky are we.

@cam_mcleay is in his absolute element … back in his natural habitat, doing what he truly loves with people he loves. It’s a thing of beauty to behold.

We began our journey north at @ziwawildliferanch, staying in their beautiful new luxury chalets. We’ve been visiting Ziwa since it first opened in 2005 and continue to be deeply inspired by the extraordinary role they’ve played in saving white rhinos from extinction in Uganda and successfully reintroducing them back into the wild.

Our rhino viewing and guiding experience was next level. And what a bonus to have our dear friend Wendy @bonwen in residence so we could congratulate her and her family in person for their sensational conservation work. What a gift they are to the world.

Uganda … you have our hearts again 🦏🌿

Our safari continues … stay tuned.

❤️ Have bike. Will travel.

We made it! And yes… the bike made it too.
That crazy kid @cam_mcleay will go to extraordinary lengths to make sure he gets his chosen exercise fix. The looks he got at the airports were pure gold. I oscillated between giggling and pretending I wasn’t with him. Meditation in motion helps.

What a joy to be back in Uganda. Such warm welcomes, beautiful smiles, and heartfelt happiness to be here.

Stay tuned ✨ …
