Honouring our Community this Black History Month 💥

We are delighted to have two of our Community Exchanges alumni delivering workshops over the month responding to and celebrating the Black community and history in Camberwell, Peckham and South London. Meet our facilitators:

Folasade is a British Nigerian illustrator, workshop facilitator and art educator. She graduated in BA (Hons) Illustration from Camberwell College of Arts in 2024. Her illustrations explore meaningful and emotive concepts inspired by her poetry and creative writing, expressing the spectrum of human emotions. Alongside her practice, she designs and facilitates enriching Art & Design workshops for children, young people and adults.

Folasade is delivering three workshops with local schools where they will create a portrait that honors a Black person or figure who has made a positive impact on their life, local community or is an inspiration to them.

Maya is a multidisciplinary artist and facilitator whose practice explores creative expression and underrepresented experiences, with a particular interest in working class and POC perspectives. Maya holds an HE in Theatre Arts from the National Youth Theatre and a BA in Acting and Performance from UAL where she specialised in Writing, Directing and Performance.

For her two workshops, she will run ‘AMPLIFY’, a creative writing workshop inspired by Black History Month, celebrating the rich, complex and powerful stories of London’s people and communities. Maya will be running a public workshop on the 21 October, book your spot via the link in our bio.

We'll be sharing snippets of the workshops along the way!

✨ Community Exchanges: Building Connections ✨

📍 Camberwell Space
🗓️ 3 August – 30 October 2026

Join us for Community Exchanges: Building Connections; a process-led exhibition celebrating three years of creativity, collaboration, and community.

Since 2023, Community Exchanges has supported students and alumni from Camberwell, Chelsea, and Wimbledon Colleges of Arts to design and deliver creative workshops with local partners across Merton, Southwark, and Westminster. Together, we've created opportunities for learning, connection, exchange, and inclusive community practice.

This exhibition shares the stories, relationships, and impact that have grown through the programme, highlighting the people, partnerships, and creative projects that have shaped Community Exchanges along the way.

Visit Camberwell Space to discover what we do, how we work, and who we work with and help us imagine what comes next.

We can't wait to welcome you. A full list of activity will be shared in the lead up and you can find more information in our bio 💛

As well as currently showing at Camberwell Space, Helena Samarasinghe is also part of Beyond Boundaries: a new series of public artworks around Tate Modern and Bankside.

She is one of six emerging artists asked to produce murals that celebrate the life and legacy of iconic artist Frida Kahlo, coinciding with Tate Modern’s major exhibition.

Helena mural explores representation and diversity in women’s football, reflecting Mexico’s global cultural presence coinciding with this year’s World Cup.

You can also see Helena’s solo exhibition, Reaching, Touching, Shedding, at Camberwell Space until Friday 17 July. And if you're nearby this evening (29 June), the gallery will be open late from 5–9pm to coincide with the Postgraduate Show Private View.

Free to attend and open to all.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Reaching, Touching, Shedding – Post-Match Conversation last Friday.

Through shared experiences and thoughtful discussion, the evening explored the relationships between sport, identity and community, considering how forms of belonging are created both on and beyond the field of play.

Thank you to Helena Samarasinghe, Jerome Ince-Mitchell, Nicholas Bryne, Sophie Bownes, Simrandeep Chana and Ana Teles for their generosity and insight, and to all who contributed to the conversation.

Reaching, Touching, Shedding continues at Camberwell Space until 17 July.

❗❗❗ PLEASE NOTE the gallery will be closed Thu 25 & Fri 26 June due to the heatwave. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.

This summer, millions of eyes are on the game.

But what happens around it? In the stands, on the sidelines, in the conversations that continue long after play ends?

Join us for Reaching, Touching, Shedding – Post-Match Conversation, an evening of discussion inspired by Helena Samarasinghe's exhibition and the communities, identities and forms of belonging that sport can create.

The event begins with a walkthrough of the exhibition, before moving into a relaxed roundtable bringing together artists, curators and athletes. Taking its cue from the post-match debrief, the conversation will consider what art and sport share: collective experience, participation, care, competition and the ways we come together around common goals.

Helena Samarasinghe will be joined by Jerome Ince-Mitchell, Nicholas Bryne, Sophie Bownes, Ana Teles and Dorsa Yavarivafa for an open discussion shaped by feminist perspectives, postcolonial thinking and lived experience.

📅 Friday 19 June, 6.00–8.30pm
📍 Camberwell Space

Free to attend and open to all. Booking required via the link in bio.
