Huge congratulations to artist Helena Samarasinghe (@helena_samarasinghe), 2024 BA Drawing alumna from Camberwell College of Arts and winner of the Vanguard Prize 2024, on her powerful first solo exhibition ‘Reaching, Touching, Shedding’ at @camberwellspace! 🌟🎨

In this stunning debut solo show, Helena bridges the gap between the sports pitch and drawing. Her new body of work—developed during her studio residency using oil, soft pastels, and charcoal on paper or newsprint—is heavily inspired by the bold, gestural contours of Kalighat painting.Through raw mark-making and intense colour, she captures the explosive movement, power, and integrity of feminine bodies colliding in football, rugby, and track. 🏃‍♀️⚽️🏉

What makes this work so special? Helena isn’t interested in elite, commercialised competition. She plays on a community football team in a local park, focusing on the grassroots experience. For her, drawing and sports are parallel acts: every brushstroke and line is a form of unscored choreography registering a body in motion. These women protagonists reclaim their own agency and visibility on the paper, and we know they are just as unstoppable off the pitch! 💪🔥📅

On view now until 17 July 2026
