There are hundreds of different film cameras out there. Here are a few of our favourites for beginners. πŸ“· There are tonnes more we would recommend, and everyone's needs are a little different. If you're not sure which to buy, get in touch with us!

But our main piece of advice for beginners choosing a camera is to choose one you are excited to learn about and use. And read the manual. πŸ‘ Learning becomes a lot easier when you are excited to do it, and any film camera becomes suitable for a beginner.

We've created user guides for a few of our cameras to help first-time users (we will be doing more!) 😁

I cannot believe it is a controversial opinion to not use AI as a creative, photography business. 🫠 The joy and physicality of creating analogue images is the lifeblood of our analogue camera shop. πŸ“· Promoting image-creating tools whilst creating AI imagery for our website would seem totally contradictory. In addition, why would we create AI images when we have incredible cameras at our fingertips? The photo above, for example, was taken by @emmajlloyd_ at @film.gathering with the Pentax 6x7.

Being on the precipice of AI creating more and more of the images you see in the world feels similar to when digital photography became more popular than film photography. Except in this reality, there is no reason to go outside and create your own images, illustrate your own perspective or explore your own creativity physically. Whilst travel, time and resources are all a privilege, creativity is a muscle that needs exercise and thrives with use.

The text and blogs on our website are also written by real people. The thing AI lacks is your perspective, your feelings, your real human experience. What good is a camera review written by AI? What good is a how-to guide written by something who has never used the thing it is writing about?

This is why we do not and will not use AI across our website and social media - no matter how much it is pushed on us by app and software providers.

All of our images are real images. All of our illustrations are by real illustrators (particularly @_billy.martin and @rhapsody_in_art .) All of our blog posts are written by real people. All of our product descriptions are written by real people. Every email you get from us has been typed by a real person. Our camera quiz is created manually using my own recommendations. And yes, our live chat on the website is a real person (please don't send abuse because you think it is an AI πŸ˜‚)

Thanks for reading and take some more photos. ✌️ by @camerasbymax

There are so many film cameras out there. Like a crazy amount! And we have a few hundred different ones on our website alone. 🀯

But choosing the right one for you isn't rocket science. We have several ways to help you find your perfect camera. πŸ“·

β€’ Try our film camera quiz. Quiz is the wrong word, but questionnaire doesn't sound as fun. Answer just a few questions, enter your email, and receive a list of your recommended film cameras. Every list of recommendations has been hand-selected by us. (Yes, making the lists takes ages.)

β€’ Head over to our websites buying guide section. There are loads of blog posts on there under different titles. For example, cameras for beginners, cameras for travelling, cameras for students.

β€’ Send us a message! We are on hand to help you if you are looking for something that matches really specific requirements.

The link to our quiz is in our bio! πŸ”— by @camerasbymax

If your Olympus Trip 35 winding feels clunky or gets stuck sometimes, you may have a broken winding cog. 😬

Fortunately, this is a repair we can do and we also have brand new spare parts for this exact issue. The replacement parts are also made from brass, which means they aren't going to split again in the future. βš™οΈ

All of the Olympus Trip 35 cameras we sell are checked for this issue and repaired if needed. πŸ“·

Need to book your camera in? Send us an email to hello@camerasbymax.co.uk

Want to buy a Trip? Check them out on our website! We have loads of different colours. by @camerasbymax

We found this product catalogue from 1964. And it featured the Canon dream lens when it was originally released. 😍

The 50mm f/0.95 lens cost £233, 5 shillings and eight pence. A bargain? Well, in today's currency, that would be roughly £4100. 🀯

That's pretty crazy considering a Ford Cortina car was Β£640 and the average house price was Β£3092. So the Canon dream lens would have set you back about 8% of a house and 30% of a car. πŸ₯²

Would you have bought this lens back in the day? by @camerasbymax

Here is a quick intro into some of the types of medium format cameras and the ones we recommend for beginners! πŸ“·

Medium format can be an exciting next step after using 35mm film. The negatives are bigger; the cameras are bigger; the scans are bigger. That means higher quality images and higher quality prints. πŸ–¨

There are lots of different cameras to choose from. Some are similar to 35mm film cameras and some are wildly different.

The good news is that many of them are very affordable. So you can dip your toes in and see what you think before spending big bucks on a camera. πŸ’Έ

Cameras we'd recommend for beginners:
β€’ Lomography Diana F - cheap and easy to use. You can add accessories/different lenses and flash. There is a cult following for these cameras and many different designs to choose from.
β€’ G.B. Kershaw 110 - your affordable folding camera. Very simple. We have several similar ones available.
β€’ Yashica-Mat - an affordable, hands-on way of learning medium format. Get ready to whip out your external light meter or Sunny 16 guide.

Browse all of our Medium Format cameras in the section on our website. We also have a whole section of medium format accessories and blog posts! Link in bio. by @camerasbymax

We had a weird moment where we realised we had the exact camera that was on the front of the notebook we were using! 🀯

Unfortunately this camera is not for sale as it isn't quite working properly, but it is a super interesting one.

This is the Robot II camera and it creates 24mm x 24mm square photographs on 35mm film. 🎞 The winding mechanism is wound up on the dial on the top of the camera and unwinds as each shot is taken. It was one of the earliest spring-wound film cameras. Another popular spring-wound camera is the Canon Dial 35.

Anothet perplexing feature of this camera is the viewfinder. It can be looked through as normal or switched to a viewfinder on the side, allowing you to look through the side of the camera to see the view. πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

As mentioned, this camera is not for sale. by @camerasbymax

Results from the wonderful Fuji TW-3. 😍 Little did we know this roll of Portra 400 was already partly used and super expired. 😬 But the shots still came out great!

The camera was so easy to compose photos with and we used a mixture of the tele and wide lenses. The wide was great for street photography (used in the second example) and the tele was great for capturing things that were further away (like the balloons!) πŸ“·

This camera is available on our website and one of the many great half-frame film cameras we have available. 😁

Develop and scan by @gulabiphoto as always. 🎞 by @camerasbymax

Loading film in the Fuji TW-3. πŸ“· Results coming in future posts! (We thought this was a gorgeous roll of fresh Portra but it turned out to be already partly used and very expired. πŸ₯²)

The Fuji TW-3 is a half-frame 35mm film camera, meaning it can take up to 72 shots on a 36-exposure roll of film. 🎞

The camera pre-loads the film, so it winds all of the film into the camera and as you take each shot, it rewinds into the canister. Why is this useful? Well, it means if your camera back opened πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« whilst the film is loaded, the unused film is exposed as opposed to all the shots you have taken. βœ…οΈ Your photographs would be safe inside the canister.

The Fuji TW-3 also has two built-in focal lengths, a flash, automatic exposure and a small LED system to let you know if your photo is under or over-exposed.

All in all, a great little compact 35mm film camera. πŸ€™ And bonus! It's available now on our website. by @camerasbymax

A great quality film camera is more than just the good looks on the outside - it's what is on the inside that really matters. 🧐

That's why at Cameras By Max we don't just "resell" the cameras we have in stock; we take the time to test, repair and service all of our film cameras. πŸͺ› Not all camera shops do this, but they still charge higher prices than us.

Every camera is refurbished by us. Every camera on our website is working. Every camera has been tested by us and is ready for your adventures. πŸ• And if you have any issues or concerns about your new camera, get in touch with us. We have a 30-day warranty, but also a repair service if your camera came down with an issue later in its life.

The quality of our cameras is something we truly pride ourselves on. And we hope you appreciate it too. by @camerasbymax
